ITT, we talk about audio commentaries
« on: January 08, 2008, 11:02:18 PM »
:hump

There's nothing better to fall asleep to each night, in my mind.  I got the Lord of the Rings Trilogy extended editions pack for christmas, and dammit if the four commentaries they have are some of the more interesting oens I've listened to.  First is with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and the other lady, second is the dudes from WETA, then some other one that I think is just random production crew members (haven't listened to it yet), and last is most of the cast.  It's some good shit.

Other than that, what are some other really awesome commentaries that are worth checking out?  Any movies worth buying simply FOR the commentaries?

Kevin Smith's commentaries are always better than his movies.  Hell, I bought the special edition of Road House just because he and Moser did the commentary.

off topic, but do the extended editions of LOTR include EVERYTHING because I heard from a fan that Jackson cut out a lot of random shit.

Are you asking if he cut stuff from the theatrical versions?  From what I've witnessed so far, no, that's definitely not the case.  If he did, then he added much more so it's hard to notice if anything is missing.

The beginning of Fellowship is vastly different, if that might interest you.  It has the same prologue, but then shifts to Bilbo narrating for 5 minutes about his adventures and hobbits–it's basically him starting A Hobbit's Tale.

Has anyone noticed when you listen to audio commentaries that the film playing in the background doesn't feel like the same one as when you're viewing it normally? It's like watching some edited 'make of'.

Naw, I've rarely heard anything other then the voices in the commentaries I've heard, excepting some commentaries with Ridley Scott, in which he can be clearly heard eating a sandwich.

Oh well definitely, yes.  You can't make an approachable movie if you included everything from the books.  It would be an awful movie.  They don't inlcude Tom Bombadil, some characters at Rivendell, and the first act of Fellowship has some changes made so as to make more sense in the context of a hollywood film.

Overall, the changes and cuts are made for (mostly) good reasons.
