What did you buy (PC Upgrades edition)?
« on: January 09, 2008, 10:40:47 PM »

I picked up a 1000W power supply and a 2nd 8800GTX for SLI.  Crysis is now finally playable at high in 1920x1200.  Just barely.

It took me a week to get things working and then I found out it was because my 4 month old Soundblaster X-FI was busted.  Creative RMAs take forever so I just got another soundcard instead.

What upgrades have y'all got recently? I know a couple of you got new monitors and videocards.

is there much of an overall performance boost going from an audigy 2 yo sn x-fi?

if youre doing SLI and all that shit you want a whopper power supply, especially if you plan to upgrade in the future lol

Maf, the X-fi sounds much better than the Audigy 2.  Everything is just clearer.   I don't know about performance differences but Drinky told me that you free up more CPU power with a X-FI.  Also, the X-Fi supports more sound effects and more importantly, it works much better for Vista if you want to continue using EAX.

1000W power supply.

.......

Do you have it running 24/7 too?

My PC used to be always on but now I try to turn it off more often.   Does how much power the PC's actually using make any difference?  I know that the CPU and GPUS draw much less power when you're not gaming but does it make any difference in terms of electricity that is being used?  Electricity is ridiculously expensive in California because of that idiot Gray Davis.

the x-fi has a wave transform unit (wtu) on it that handles directsound/eax calls in hardware. think of it like a gpu -- for sound. it gives you a few fps boost in the best cases, and no tangible effect at all in others.

Smooth Groove!  :hyper :bow

I plan on getting a new video card when the next major nVidia revision comes around and finally moving up to 24" 1920x1200 since the cards will have finally caught up to that native resolution. I'll also be slapping in quad core CPU to upgrade my E6300 and move up to 4GB instead of my current 2GB (and finally move up to 64-bit Vista).

That's the plan for the middle of this year.
