I read Guns, Germs and Steel a while back, it was pretty good but he reiterated his main point over and over again, and I'm not sure I agree with some of his observations (like... tribal Papua New Guineans are more intelligent than the average first-worlder, what?). Collapse was a vastly more interesting book to me.

I think I saw it at B&N (theres a whole listing of the series of books inside the book itself). I may pickup the Lovecrat one too to keep the PKD book company

I agree with your criticisms with Guns Germs and Steel, but I thought Collapse is significantly more problematic. He seems to not back up his (often highly subjective) assertions nearly as much, and not only does the book repeat itself, but it also repeats content from Guns Germs and Steel.

Mind you, I do like both books. I think I would have enjoyed Collapse more if I read it first.

There's one of Walt Whitman's complete works and another of American crime novels of the early 20th century. Those America's library editions are pretty damn great.

Right now I'm reading a truly awful book called Dogs and Demons: The Fall of Modern Japan. Before that, I was reading Sputnik Sweetheart...anyone else read that? Just finished it yesterday and I'm a bit confused about the ending.

It's a lot of fun. It recycles a lot of his ideas though. You can browse most of his stuff at kurzweil.ai and get a feel for his thinking. (short version: UTOPIA IS COMING, FAST)

the lovecraft book is great, if you haven't read much lovecraft before

it contains At the Mountains of Madness, which is probably my favorite work along with some "greatest hits" (ie the stuff in seemingly EVERY collection).

I thought the same about Collapse, especially the point where the book seems to repeat itself. Still a good book for nonfiction fans, but really it's a book that is, to some degree, more interesting to talk about when laid against the problems of modern society than actually read.

I bought groceries this week, that's about it. I almost bit on some of the wal-mart preorder deals this morning, but console games = ugghhhh and wal-mart = double-plus uggghh. I'll buy something from XBLA this weekend.

Sometimes I wish I could be that sensible. Or to at least get a 4 door Civic instead of a performance car. Grats on paying off the Focus. I need to pay the $800 left on my current car and get some repairs done so I can sell it.

Dude, I SO want a Mustang..I mean in the worst way, but with the way things are going with gas and pushes against performance cars, id rather just make it easy and give up with a Prius purchase.

I've dumped about 3000 in repairs on the car in the past 2 years, its having its 110k mile economy car issues

A prius is a great car for the sluggish march in the stop and go commute anyway.

Got a membership for a NYSC that just opened right down the block from me... it's absolutely massive (one of the largest gyms in NY), all the exercise machines are brand-spankin new, free personal trainer sessions, and a junior olympic pool. Gonna start going next week after the LASIK surgery goes through. Can't wait.

The RSX will still get 31 mpg highway so it's not bad there. Around town I'll get low 20's, though. And it takes premium. If I lived in a real city I would have bought an econobox.

I just popped it in and checked out a few of the features. Screams quality, but it doesn't seem to be quite as extensive as the Se7en set. 2 commentary tracks though. I'll get back to you about the added footage. We're going to watch it tonight.

The Platinum series is the Se7en DVD I'm talking about.

And holy shit at the docu on disc 2 about the real people and events surrounding the Zodiac. You know the kid that gets shot at the very beginning of the film? The one that lives and is later seen at the very end as an adult identifying the killer? He's in this and holy crap is ever fucked in the head. The only man that's supposedly seen the Zodiac and lived also happens to be shit balls insane. Perfect crime confirmed.

Alright, seriously, if anyone has any interest in Zodiac you gotta pick up the DC disc. The two documentaries on the second disc ("This is the Zodiac Speaking" and "His Name was Arthur Leigh Allen") are worthy to be released seperately. Incredibly compelling stuff....and nearly 3 hours (!).
