I am repurposing this thread.

I don't fucking know what to do.  I can't fucking sleep.  I'm not fucking tired.  I just walked for an hour and a fucking half.  At 3AM.  I didn't nap or anything today, or yesterday.  I slept for 3 fucking hours last night.

I fucking don't know what to do.  I am frustrated and my head is just rushing.  I can't even keep my eyes closed.  Dunno what the fuck to do.

I gotta lay off the pills.  At least until this stomach thing isn't an issue.  It takes me upwards of 12 OTC sleeping pills to even feel an effect.  I can't responsibly take melatonin because it fucks up my sleep schedule ridiculously.

Fact is I can't really trust myself with sleeping pills.  I have had sleeping issues my whole life, and if I had a "win" button like that, it would be abused until I became immune.

I don't even know what roiboos are.

I can't listen to music loudly because I will get distracted and focus on the music, plus I live in an apartment.

I can take the puking and hocked up stomach linings.  This is what really frustrates me.

That wouldn't work.  I have enough nightmares sleeping with my retainer in.  If I had something on me that could feasibly strangle me, I would never sleep again.  When I slept last night, I dreamt that someone was trying to fucking get in my windows.  It was realistic and I woke up in dream and it was terrifying.  I also dreamt that I found fucking footprints in my apartment, after another dream wake-up.  My dreams are all fucking hyperrealistic nightmares, and I don't *need* more fuel.

Yeah, it is.  I am kind of anti-medication when it comes to this simply because I know the problem is so ingrained that anything prescribed will be abused until the point of immunity.  This has been going on since I was a little kid, and I think this is just how I'm wired or something

In most cases insomnia is a condition that can be treated without a doctor via various lifestyle changes. For a few months I had been having anxiety attacks for no reason, and elevated heartbeat and tension while trying to get to sleep. To combat this I changed my daily diet to cut down on sugars, caffiene, and alcohol. I also started taking valerian root, st johns wort, as well as a homeopathic remedy that contains passion flower and chamomile.

Since the mind is as much a problem as the chemicals in your system, I have started stopping all 'high adrenaline' activities at 10pm, and instead listen to music, browse the web play an rpg, or read a book. If I think I need it I will either take two Tylenol PM (which is what most insomniacs tend to use if they arent seeing a doctor) or a couple fingers of scotch. Its suggested that you stay away from alcohol as a frequent nightcap as it will overtime create problems with elevated heart rates before bed.

A good even distribution of fuel to your body during the day is also good. Try to keep eating to earlier in the day and try to eat dinner before 6pm, if you are busy, you can eat a sort of 'brunch' sized meal later in the evening and get away with it, but make sure it isnt particularly spicey or fatty.

Its also important to set a routine. I go to bed at 11-11:30 every night and wake up at 5:45-6 everyday if I can. Occationally if I need sleep I will slip to waking up at 8 on weekends cause wtf, its the weekend. I think whats more important while trying to set a new sleep schedule is when you wake up. If you try to set a new schedule by taking naps in the middle of the day, you will be up late, sleep late, and your energy will again run well past 11pm. You have to force yourself to wake up at a shitty hour, so when the time comes to sleep you need it. Once the sleep schedule is set it will be more important that you are consistent as to when you go to bed, and when you wake up will be less important.

IF you have tried all of this, and it doesnt work, you may have a serious issue that requires doctor direction and over the counter meds, but if you go to a doctor before trying these things, you may be paying big bucks for common sense.

Edit: I would also like to add that increased physical activity will also aid in making a person tired. It doesnt take a whole lot of energy to sustain a person doing a desk job and no physical impact hobbies, which is pretty common for almost everyone. There's a REASON I feel tired at work but when I get home I am not. Its my body saying Ohh yeah, saved all this up, time to ROCK.

First things first:  Advil PM has 50% more active sleeping ingredient than Tylenol PM.  I LEARNED FROM YOU THAT ADVIL IS BETTER! 

I've had little luck with most supplements in the past.  You have named some I haven't tried (mainly St. John's Wort).  In most cases, for whatever reason, I'm either especially "Weak" to their effects, or I get unintended sicky side effects.  For that reason, I tend to avoid experimentation with supplements.  I can smoke crack with Amri0x all day, but even an especially stiff vitamin will give me problems.  And I can't take geltabs at all because they expand in my stomach, cause nastiness when throwing up, and I believe even cause problems with shitting.  I am a soft boy in many regards.

Sleep schedule-wise, I am in a situation that's a version of the one I've had all my (non-sleeping pill using) life, more or less.  The only difference now is that I know exactly what hours I sometimes fall asleep at, rather than just sitting like a distinguished mentally-challenged kid with my eyes closed.  Seeing a sleep therapist means going through a psychologist or psychiatrist, and those bastards get dollar signs in their eyes when they see a neurotic paranoid like me.  Heck, if I told them some of my more paranoid dreams, along with apt descriptions of how intensely realistic they are, I can 100% guarantee that they would recommend me committing myself in a psych ward for observation.  Again. (fyi, I had another one of those dreams last night.  I dreamt that I woke up, and there was some noir-y Third Man SOB standing in the shadows in my hallway, obscured from view by shadow, but cigarette smoke.  I could fucking smell the smoke.  This terrified me, and I woke up.  It was so realistic that I had to fucking struggle to not check out my apartment.  I realized that this was the line:  If I went and looked for fucking Orson Welles or Humphrey in my apartment, at 6AM, then I had to be psychotic or schizophrenic or on the break or something.  I just went back to bed and closed my fucking eyes and didn't open them until my first alarm went off).

Maybe I will mention something to the general practitioner I end up seeing later this month.  I plan on de-crazying myself before that appointment and erasing any behaviors that I think might be construed as worrisome to an attentive doctor.  Like I said before, my only REAL problem with the sleep thing is that I HAVE TO SLEEP because of work.  I'd be happier than a pig in shit to live by my own biorhythms.  I certainly don't want some shrink using my skull as a fucking half-pipe if that what it takes to adhere to a socially acceptable sleeping schedule.  I, for the most part, like my brain just the way it is.  Including the awesome dreams.

Take melatonin or over the counter sleep aids (Diphenhydramine I think).

Melatonin has a percent chance for side effect of vivid dreams/nightmares.

I had an ok session, better than usual. Mainly because I was tired from raking leaves. Went to bed at 2AM after reading some GRRM, woke up at 8:30AM to get ready for school. Looks like I won't be late today :o

I take 2 Tylenol PM a night now, I feel pretty ugh in the morning even if I do get to sleep quickly. I took two last night at 10, went to bed at 11:15, woke up at 6 feeling like death, but here I am whoop! Im walking im talking arghhhh wish I could sleep

Do what I do, take a hell of a trip. I haven't done it in a while, but just take a hell of a drive (or if you don't drive, fly outta the country) somewhere you've never been before. Take the long way everywhere. If it's anxiety keeping you up, do what I do: say fuck it.

Brother worrying you the fuck out over his "Problem"? Fuck it.

Worried about passing this class? Fuck it.

Worried about somebody in your place? Fuck it.

Wondering what the fuck you're gonna do after graduating? Fuck it.



The only other non-chemical method I've ever heard of is to get comfortable and do something you absolutely despise.

I make a (usually successful) effort to walk about an hour every night.  If insomnia is going really badly, I will walk late at night, too.

Physical exertion used to do the trick.  The issues now are:

1) Kinda time.  It is difficult to work into my schedule.  More honestly, it is difficult to get to places that I think our interesting to explore.
2) I can't do gyms.  I am too neurotic for that.
3) I have mild concerns about what my stomach/metabolism will do if I start doing more exerting things.  I will be burning qualities, and if anything, I will be taking in significantly fewer calories than I am now, since physical exertion is likely to aggravate the pukin'

I appreciate the advice though, and I would be happy to try it out to some extent if I had a more workable schedule.

Do what I do, take a hell of a trip. I haven't done it in a while, but just take a hell of a drive (or if you don't drive, fly outta the country) somewhere you've never been before. Take the long way everywhere. If it's anxiety keeping you up, do what I do: say fuck it.

Brother worrying you the fuck out over his "Problem"? Fuck it.

Worried about passing this class? Fuck it.

Worried about somebody in your place? Fuck it.

Wondering what the fuck you're gonna do after graduating? Fuck it.



The only other non-chemical method I've ever heard of is to get comfortable and do something you absolutely despise.
