Quote
Parted-at-birth twins 'married'

A pair of twins who were adopted by separate families as babies got married without knowing they were brother and sister, a peer told the House of Lords.

A court annulled the UK couple's union after they discovered their true relationship, Lord Alton said.

The peer - who was told of the case by a High Court judge involved - said the twins felt an "inevitable attraction".

He said the case showed how important it was for children to be able to find out about their biological parents.

Details of the of the identities of the twins involved have been kept secret, but Lord Alton said the pair did not realise they were related until after their marriage.

The former Liberal Democrat MP raised the couple's case during a House of Lords debate on the Human Fertility and Embryology Bill in December.

"They were never told that they were twins," he told the Lords.

"They met later in life and felt an inevitable attraction, and the judge had to deal with the consequences of the marriage that they entered into and all the issues of their separation."

He told the BBC News website that their story raises the wider issue of the importance of strengthening the rights of children to know the identities of their biological parents .

"If you start trying to conceal someone's identity, sooner or later the truth will out," he said.

"And if you don't know you are biologically related to someone, you may become attracted to them and tragedies like this may occur."

I bet this is a fake story planted by mothers around the country so they can pull the story out whenever they give the "YES you are going to the familiy reunion or THIS might happen to you!" speech

I don't know my birth father, and I used to fear sometimes that I'd end up falling in love with someone who turned out to be my half-brother.

Thank god my boyfriend knows who both of his parents are.

My father had a passionate affair (is this the right word?) with a woman who was recently separated from her husband.  The separation was short and she got back with her husband rather quickly, and she became pregnant with a daughter shortly afterwards.  I guess it's a 50/50 flip if it was my father or her husband's, but for the sake of her marriage, they never wanted to find out.  He'd always warn me that if I met this girl that looked like this at a certain age to make sure she wasn't my half-sister.

How do you respond to something like that  :lol

I can just imagine him asking you at random times..."have you seen her? Oh, well look out"

I just chalked it up to the immature, zany antics of my father.  Like, "Oh, that's our Dad!" and we'd all hear canned studio laughter.  My father is kind of a neurotic insane person, and although I love him, he's prone to bits of weird immaturity.  Case in point, he's currently going to Montgomery College (local community college) to get a degree in something (it always changes), and lives in a house with his estranged wife (he moved into my old bedroom and sleeps on a mattress, and this is his second marriage).  He's also currently involved with a female student who is young enough to be my sister.

So, really (and this is just the tip of the iceberg), if you know my father for long, this stuff isn't that surprising.

But isn't the real issue here that you are really vain, and if you found someone that resembled you, you'd probably be more likely to sleep with them?
