MOH: Heroes for PSP - BUY IT
« on: October 25, 2006, 12:37:45 AM »
If you like FPS games, and you own a PSP, this is a must have.  I've only played it about a 1/2 hour, and it's on time.  The controls are about as good as it's ever going to get for FPS on PSP, with a lot of options and sensitivity tweaking.  The enemy and squad AI isn't frustrating, and the visuals are clear and discernible.  Load times are negligble.  The levels are just the right size for your portable gaming time.  Fuck that dude on IGN who said the levels were too short - first PSP game levels are too long, NOW they're too short?  Get off the glass dick, IGN.  There's a skirmish mode with maps you unlock via single player, where you can set up a deathmatch with up to 16 enemy bots for quick single play.  Apparently there's all kinds of unlockable "skins" for your character you can unlock and use online.  I haven't actually played online yet, but I will be hosting some 32 player matches from my PC server setup this weekend (you can download server software from EA and run your own setup - how fucking cool is that for a portable?).  I'll bump this up with the details later.  I may not be there for every match, but I'll give admin rights to some trusted Evilborian to keep the fucktardery to a minimum.

Bottom line - for a portable FPS, this game delivers.  Tons of options, multiplayer done right, the best FPS controls for PSP so far, great longevity and replayability for your buck.  Worth the $40.

You know, I really can't understand why there hasn't been more buzz about this on the message boards.  I know it's another WWII shooter for the pile, but it really breaks a lot of ground for portable gaming, and that's buzzworthy in itself.  32 player online matches, PC user-hosted servers (with stats!), single player bot matches where every single level from the game is a playable map, short and snappy levels for pick up and play, lots of unlockables serving as "achievements" you can show off online...I never thought I'd be saying this, but PSP developers could learn a lot from the example EA set with this game.  I think a lot is riding on it, too, as far as future EA PSP development goes.  I mean, EA threw everything AND the kitchen sink in there for your $40.  If it tanks...well, I think it's back to stripped-down PS2 ports, at the very least.

well, GAF is largely Nintendo fanboys, so a lack of PSP discussion is to be expected. However, the True Gamers(tm) appreciate your reviews and buzz!

Just so I am not raped by purple prose later on, I will hedge my glowing review with the following:

I like WWII games a lot, since I am into WWII history and the overall time period.  Therefore, I am apt to overlook or give a pass to certain flaws.  The game isn't perfect by any means (the graphics are more suited for play speed than eye candy, for example), and the controls do take a few minutes to get used to - but it's about as good as an FPS is ever gonna get on the PSP (control-wise).

Does Ace Combat feel right with controls? I was interested in it, that and GTA VCS this year has been really slow for my PSP. And MGS PO is gonna kill my hands

I have been trying to figure out this goddamned server setup for the past hour, and can't get it set up to save my life.  The motherfucking Read Me file is completely useless, and I can't find any help on the internet.  If I haven't figured this shit out by Sunday this game goes on ebay.

THANKS FOR EXPLAINING ABSOLUTE DICK ABOUT YOUR GAME FEATURES, EA
