Apocalypto (Blu Ray)
« on: January 14, 2008, 04:33:00 AM »
I vide'd this earlier and was pleasantly surprised!

This ended up being a really good one time thru experience for me. I was interested enough and on the edge of my seat enough to find the movie very fulfilling but I do not think I will buy for the collection.

+ Blu Ray visuals look good but not perfect. Much less letter-boxing here than some titles provide your screen with many inches of luscious jungle landscape on par with the LOST Blu Ray.

+ Casting/Costumes were brill altho after 2.2 hours of watching in HD you will start to notice skin color differences for the hairpieces/skull caps and rubber ears with stretched lobes. The enemy army in particular looks great and feature much detail in their costume.

+ Realistic gore that will cause you to flinch a few times (flinch at imagining the pain)

Anyway - I recommend for a single viewing at minimum. The movie is a good ride - and while it does have some silly ass moments towards the end, it completes itself well and rounds out the story/ending in a respectable way.

You seen this - what you think?

It's a pretty cool movie. Last 45 minutes are Predator: Mayan Civilization, which means they are totally awesome.

spoiler (click to show/hide)

The scene in the city where they are sacrificing the captives with the emperor and those priests on so many drugs killing people over and over was pretty damn amazing. I thought the emperor and the main priest were particularly badass.

The brick detail etc on the sets there was lovely in HD.

It's a damned good action movie which came out at an unfortunate time.  Also, people like my friend Rick were expecting a history lesson with lots of cultural insight, and hahahaha to that.  I knew exactly what it was before I ever watched it - a 1 1/2 hour chase scene - so I was not disappointed.

That chase will be classic in years time.  It's incredible on so many levels.

How did this movie do in theater?

I hope it did well.  I went and saw it on opening night.  Mel is my hero

Love this movie....infact it really surprised me how much I liked it.  With the Blu Ray sale over at Amazon, it seemed like a natural choice to pick up.  Should be here sometime this week.

HD Apocalypto baby.

It didn't do particularly well, but then again it wasn't supposed to lol. I like Mel because he makes the movies HE wants to see. Still haven't see Apocalypto but it fucking annoys me when liberal fucktards say the movie bombed because of Mel's jew comments. omfg :punch

My Blu-Ray(s) that I bought off Amazon arrived the other day and we watched Apocalypto last night.  I was actually impressed with the transfer.   Sure, there seems to be some grain every now and then (particularly on some early close ups on a few characters) but I'm not so sure if it wasn't supposed to look like that.  By the time they get to the river crossing though, everything just seemed to pop off the screen.  Really gorgeous to look at and pretty damn impressive.  I also appreciate the 1:85 aspect ratio so there's no letterboxing and the image fills up my entire screen without having to resort to some trickery.  Nice disc to own.
