Finally caught this year's indie darling today.

If Wes Anderson, Zach Braff, Buffy, and Veronica Mars had some kind of twisted four-way sex, their distinguished mentally-challenged offspring would be Juno (both character and the film). Anderson's style.....except overdone. Braff's incessant "namedropping for indie cred".....even more overdone (if you thought "This Shins song will change your life" was bad, there are some real winners here). Combine that with the spunky, smarmy beyond-their-years heroines of Joss Whedon and Rob Thomas (minus the heart) and you have Juno. She walks through a fairly serious situation with a snotty, cavalier nature that is more alienating than endearing, and even as she destroys people's lives she doesn't experience much more than selfish remorse.

I also tend to worry about this film's moral influence as well......something that rarely bothers me outside of Sex and The City. I guess the silver lining around the Writer's Strike is that the shine on Cody Diablo may fade long before Hollywood is in a position to buy/produce anymore of her work.

Anyhow, Drinky Crow already called it -- Garden State 2007.

That would be pretty cool, but he's too calculating to join the College Democrats. He probably wants his political affiliations to be a bit secret in case he ever decides to go work for the government in some capacity.

Juno is super twee at parts (the first two scenes had me TERRIFIED that the rest of the movie was going to be like that), but I gotta defend the name-dropping of the bands. It's ultimately used for characterization (Juno = naive, Bateman = aging hipster) rather than just "they're awesome cause they like stuff I like".

It's not a bad movie, though I'm sort of stunned that people like Ebert (not a towering intellect, at least a professional film reviewer) are heaping accolades on it. The indie comedy should be well enough established as a genre that Juno wouldn't surprise anyone into thinking it was great.

i can't abide anything that makes teenagers -- the very scum of existence -- seem more intelligent than they are. conversely, i will praise any movie that portrays them as miserable bleating beasts fit only for drudgery and beatings.

when a teenager is permitted to attend a movie, it should be for one reason: to be reminded of their shame, and to likewise be reminded that penitence is their duty

My philosophy is that if a movie does not feature teenagers being dehumanized and forced to eat feces, it probably isn't a very accurate depiction of what young people's lives should be like.

Uh I am dead serious. She has very little competition for that oscar. She is easily the front runner for it. Who would she lose to? There is no original movie (no coutry, there will be blood are adapations) that even come close to the popularity amongst the hollywood elite that Juno gets.

Garden State has made me reluctant to check out indie teen comedies. Unless it is universal in praise, I won't be bothering with this one.

I don't know, I didn't think it was as bad as Garden State. The way I see it is that if there's a time in your life where you're supposed to be overly dramatic about everything, it's when you're a teenager. I found the overly precocious dialog to be more obnoxious.

I like Juno plenty, but like Asssaassin's Creed, it's the worst thing I have nothing bad to say about. I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE the way Mark's character was dealt with. Ok I recently watched There Will Be Blood, Once and Juno. I kind of watch my movies in bunches when I'm in the mood.

As for Juno, I have to agree with Mandark that the band name dropping and such was annoying, but it is on for that type of character. Someone reaching that hard to be cool that they go outside their generation of music or status quo to show off, naively thinking that is what its all about.

I didn't hate the movie at all. The banter did annoy me and I am not sure teenagers really talk like that, but it sets Juno's too cool for school attitude up for a great pitfall when the reality of adult life hits. Actually, the serious parts of the film, the dramatic parts were way better than the comedic parts. Thundercats Ho did make me laugh though.

On the downside, I don't think they showed the reality of Pregnancy with Juno and that her behavior doesn't change. There would be shitstorms of emotional mood swings in reality. Also, the movie has quite a negative portrayal of males. A boyfriend who takes no part in the pregnancy and an overgrown boyman who leaves his wife and hits on a sixteen year old.
