Author Topic: Help me expand my Blu-ray collection. (Read 1668 times)

My local HMV has a special tomorrow. Pick any four Blu-rays for $100. It's not a bad deal considering how distinguished mentally-challenged HD media costs in Canada. I currently have:

Plant Earth
Superbad
Babel
The Prestige
FF: The Spirits Within
Crank
The Curse of the Black Pearl
Dead Man's Chest (lol)
16 Blocks

As you can see, I am not exactly a big movie buff. I'd really like to hear some recommendations. Any suggestions are welcome.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and here's why:

Out of all of my Blu-rays, this is the one with the best transfer. It's ridiculous how fucking good the transfer for this film looks. I watched it again last night and shit, it's pretty damn incredible.

Pan's Labyrinth has about the same quality of transfer to it, if not better. Plus, seeing as you already have Babel, you might be interested in the Charlie Rose episode (sadly, standard def) bonus feature which has an interview with Del Toro, Inarritu, and Cuaron.

Close Encounters is about as nice of a set as I hear the Blade Runner set is. The transfer's decent, you get all three versions of the film on one disc, the other disc is loaded with HD special features, and it comes with a comparison chart. Plus, the box is damn pretty.

Other than that, use your own judgment and movie tastes, there's a pretty good selection of films on Blu-ray all ready, and even the shittier transfers look better than DVDs.

Does not compute. I only saw it in theaters (where it looked FUCK AMAZING), but from everything I hear The Final Cut looks FUCK AMAZING on Blu-Ray/HD-DVD.

I meant more of as in the amount of special features, sorry if I didn't clarify that.

That Close Encounters collection is a must if you are a Spielberg fan. It's like a straight port of the recent DVD edition, hence the not a lot of additional special features. Still, 3 full cuts of the movie by itself is a nice package.

The visual transfer is very nice. The only negative is that when you HD-ize old special effects without Lucasing them up and "improving" them, they can sometimes look a bit janky. That's not the transfer's fault, it's the fault of a movie showing its age a little.

Easily Spielberg's best, by the way. And yes, I will argue that. Actually, I might concede that Jaws is better. Maybe. Well, the first Indy movie is better if you count that, too.

they've all been recommended already, but 2001, blade runner, and ratatouille are my favorite bds. the searchers is impressive too -- it's a great movie, it's visually spectacular, and it was shot in a high-resolution panoramic film format that makes it a perfect candidate for the hd treatment.

incidentally i never paid attention to movie studios before this stupid format war, but i think my bd collection is like 75% warner. as are my recommendations here.

I pay attention to the studios just because of the quality of the releases. Warner's DVDs post-2000 have all been top-notch, and they easily have the best film library of all the major studios. What's more, the people in charge of the DVD division over there clearly have a great love of film, as seen by the selections of somewhat obscure stuff they release on a regular basis.

The only Japanese Blu-ray I have is Ghost in the Shell: Innocence, which does have English subtitles. Some do, some don't.

I won't say it's his best (Raiders, Schindler's List is up there for me) but it's probably one of his top five films. The entire childhood wonder theme he places in his films really shows itself in this one. Since I never did get the DVD, I'm glad to have the Blu-Ray.
