It is a bit freaky to see how complete the indoctrination is. But I was prepared for that by the last few years, and before that by repeated exposure to bus stop prophets.

I actually get a bit frightened when people start talking about how their superior vision of reality (read: craaaaaazy conspiratorial dogma) exempts them from the rules of society or gives them authority over others.

Not like Cruise and Travolta are plotting a coup, but it's a dangerous sentiment.

I mentioned this before, but I had a friend whose parents were high up in the church (her father, as I later discovered through google, has actually appeared on TV and before congress to speak for them). She'd apostated and fled to China, for years afraid to set foot in the US.

One thing I found interesting is I'd vaguely assumed the church leaders were totally cynical and aware that they were running a scam, but she says they're actual religious fanatics. Even if Hubbard started it as a conscious scam (and I'm skeptical of Ellison's story; he likes to embellish these kinds of things) he seems to have had mental problems that worsened over time, and may well have come to believe his own crazy lies.

Even assuming the entire thing had started as a scam, and there was a small, high-level cadre who knew this and never started to believe their own stories, eventually you'd have to elevate new leaders from the lower ranks.

I can't imagine it would be easy to promote someone who's been brainwashed, tell them it's all hokum, and expect them to make the adjustment and keep running the scam.

And the only alternative would be to hire from the outside and pull a Dread Pirate Roberts.

I forget the exact anecdote, but that sounds accurate to what I remember: he was on some drug-fueled safari/retreat in Africa or something when he discovered OC3, which is the freaky shit.

I have no doubt that the current Church of Scientology is fueled by religious zealots and David Miscavige is crazy. The guy just looks crazy! He really does think that auditing cured him of his asthma and other allergies.

Hubbard was a lot of things, but the man was a genius. He created the church in such a way that it's virtually impossible to eradicate it or reason with their followers. Everyone that criticized the Church is a criminal according to them. It's just bizzare.

I'd somehow gotten the idea (probably just from his title being Chairman of the Board) that Miscavige was in fact hired from the outside, that he'd previously been a corporate exec or something, sort of like Apple bringing in the CEO of Pepsi to run their company. This turns out to be far from the truth though.

No, Miscavige had asthma, allergies and other physical ailments. His family read Dianetics and decided to get that a try, and apparently he was cured or has gone prolonged periods of time without having asthma attacks or allergies or what have you. Thus, he was a convert! And he proved himself to Hubbard and advanced through the ranks rapidly, so much so that he was basically running the whole show before Hubbard's death and apparently micromanages the whole operation nowadays. Creepy guy.
