that picture of yuffie that somebody posted in another thread has convinced me that nomura has actually gotten better at drawing these last ten years. i loathe his j-rock androgynes, but yuffie looks like something an idiot drew on his binder in school.

look at his FF7 art in general (not the characters, only his drawings) they all look horrible today, his drawings got much better in FF8.

I said this when it was first unveiled. FFXIII and Versus XIII are both VII rip offs and not in a good way. It's like they're taking almost every cool and awesome about FFVII and VIII and amping the more ridiculous stuff times 1000 and not even in an original way. I think they're doing this to appeal to the fanboys or something. I love FFVII and VIII's worlds the most, but it's like they're trying too hard to make it look mainstream. It lacks that spark. I mean, compare the FFXII trailers to the FFXIII trailers and you'll know what I'm talking about and FFXII just came out 2 years ago.

actually, if FF13 turned out to be not better graphically than LO, then it will be the biggest lol of this gen.

wanna know why? because SE are using their own engine while LO is simply based on an open engine, UE3.

considering we don't know if we've ever really seen FF XIII at all, this conversation is pointless but...

LO looks absolutely gorgeous. But really, that's fucking CG. Look at the hair and textures! Everything is crisp and perfect. No way is that fucking realtime. If it is, I'll buy FF XIII (although never play it) just for the graphics!

UE3 is great but using your own engine is always better, no doubt.

and it doesn't help that mistwalker are kinda new + lower budget than FF/Square-Enix.

Definitely. and Square has been known for ages for having some incredible graphics but... they're also known for massive amounts of FMV and shittons of delays. And I do believe those kinds of graphics are out of the realm of possibility for this gen. Especially with a game as large and expansive as a Final Fantasy

That said, the new character that was revealed today looks like OLD final fantasy character designs. She's pretty but not over the top - she even looks *gasp* NORMAL. Really reminds me of nomura's FFVIII stuff which are by far my favorite FF character designs.

Nomura was asked to draw in a certain style for the FF7 character illustrations, it wasn't his normal style. He also did most of the monster and vehicle design for FF7, and if you look at his original design sketches, they're mostly in the same style he used in FF8 and on.

e.g.

his sketch of Sephiroth is in the FF7 character design style, but his designs for Bizarro and Safer Sephiroth look more like something from FF8 or 10 or Kingdom Hearts.

Nomura gets a lot of undue hate I think (and a lot of due hate). I don't like a lot of his KH stuff, but his overall portfolio shows a lot of range and a great eye for individual characterization. People point to Tidus and say "lol androgynous" but ignore Auron, who, aside from being fucking kickass, is an awesome design. I think that Nomura's designs for the lead character are unfortunately affected by marketing.

It's true in a lot of Japanese games too. Vaan is a textbook example, as are Ashe and Basch. Both were made more palatable to the average Japanese consumer from Yoshida's original designs.

His monster designs are great, and his FFVII and VIII designs are part of the reason Final Fantasy became huge in America. I like his X designs-- I think they fit the world that the game takes place in. I think Tidus' design fits his character, too-- like him or hate him.

the gaming forum obsession with whether characters look androgynous or not is kinda disturbing. I'm not a big fan of Nomura's character designs, but that's because they're hyper-commercialized, not because they threaten my masculinity.

I actually LOVE Nomura's art. I LOVE his FFV-X art a lot, and while I haven't played Parasite Eve, I think his art for that is AMAZING too. And Musashiden?

My problem with Tetsuya is that ever since the bouncer came out, he's been so....damn...trendy. I prefer his older stuff. I'm hard on him because I know he CAN do better than what he's been doing the past decade.

I never had a problem with Tidus' design. I loved it. Then again, FFX was revealed when I was 15, and it came out when I was 16, and I was still absolutely in love with Final Fantasy back then and it was my favorite fucking series ever, so...

Nomura did the graphics for most of the bosses in FF5 and 6, including the last bosses. Some were based on Amano's illustrations.

Why? Typical 6 month localization for their big games if it's late 08 (I think it will be because I don't think DQ9 is ready).

It'll be Fall-Spring or Spring-Fall, but it depends on DQ9.
