i clicked on it and then it began to load and i closed it out really quickly.  I have a feeling the climax will be disappointing, so I'd rather just enjoy the ride when I see the movie

Link.  He worked with Tom Cruise, I doubt Cruise would work with anyone who denounced Scientology publicly.

jesus christ, go see the movie in a theater.  As soon as you can.

J.J. Abrams. :bow

This was the most intense movie I've ever seen.  Ever.  Dear lord, what an awesome movie to see in a theater.

I bought my tickets.  I'm doing a birthday extravaganza tomorrow.  Four store managers and wives or whatnot, along with myself and a guest will be going at the 7:05 PM show.  Woo, monster movies!

I've loved monster movies far before JJ Abrams did his whole internet hype machine with Cloverfield and I assume Willco and the rest are the same way.

Pretty much.  I'm a sucker for monster movies.  I enjoyed even the bad Godzilla movies for Xenu's sake.  At the very worst, this look's competent.  I'm not saying it'll be a redefining genre film, but I definitely think it's going to be good.

So, Cloverfield.

Neat flick, but it gave me really bad motion sickness. Ugh.

Ugh.

A totally awesome experience that will sadly seem less and less cool on repeat viewings.....but WOW, that first viewing sure is awesome.

so I'd know I was right!

I also went in as absolutely spoiler-free and open-minded as possible.

nobody I was with paritcularly liked it, either, and buzz at work from people who skipped to see it at lunch was decidedly muted. expect a huge second weekend drop off.

it's the world's first big-screen youtube video!

Eh, I don't really see it.  The buzz exiting my theater was pretty ecstatic and everyone I saw it with enjoyed it to some degree.  But anecdotal evidence is kind of dumb when talking about movies.

I'm just kind of surprised you saw it - you knew you weren't going to like it!  You even PM'd me saying so!  That's like me going into a film that I think is going to suck and it living up to my expectations.

For a monster movie, it's pretty well done and I really dug it.  It's definitely not a traditional movie and it's not genre redefining, brilliant or what have you - but it is definitely fun.

it wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. I was left entirely disconnected and wondering what I'd just spent 90 minutes watching. the answer? NOTHING. there are as many ideas in the teaser trailer as in the full length movie.

when it finished, there was an audible sigh of frustration in my theater. the first thing my friend sitting next to me said was "well, Star Trek sure looks great, huh!"

I give it a fail/10.

the closing credits theme rules, tho.

Yeah, the score in the credits was phenomenal.  I know inserting that into the camera footage would've removed the film from it's handycam thing, but - man! - that stuff would rock in a conventional monster film.

I'm not quite sure what you went in wanting to watch.  The film advertised a monster movie filmed on handycam and delivered - in spades.  It's definitely not open for repeat viewings or critical analysis (it's not a metaphor for anything, it's not deep or anything).

There are folks that are definitely going to be frustrated with the ending, but I liked the grim finale.

Really, I can't really fault a movie that says, "This is what I am!" and you go to see it on that basis.  Why go see Cloverfield when you wanted more than just a monster movie filmed on handycam?

Go see There Will Be Blood instead or something!

the finale was telegraphed from about, mm, 7-10 seconds in

I think that without a metaphor or at least decent characters, a monster movie fails utterly. the movie set up "relationships" MS Visio style, then totally failed to make any of the characters interesting or worthwhile

They were just monster fodder.  The relationship was more or less a plot device to get people eaten by monsters.  I think looking any deeper than that is silly.

And you must not really like monster movies.  Only a handful of them have decent metaphors or rich characters.

Again, this movie was advertised as a straightforward monster movie that envokes 9/11 imagery in handycam form.  I can't really fault it for hitting that bar.  There weren't any powerful THIS IS A STORY ABOUT PEOPLE advertisements or talent interviews.  They were talking about MONSTERS.

And as for the finale - duh.  You know what happens to the characters probably BEFORE the movie starts.  Why would you be watching the cam corder footage if everything was okay?

I tend to feel like the 9/11 connections are enough to keep Cloverfield very engaging......the film doesn't have an out-and-out metaphor, but everything is uncanny enough to keep your jaw on the floor and your eyes on the screen.

The complaints about lack of compelling characters seem a little disingenuous to the genre.  People are upset because they weren't openly weeping at a character's death, but when have you honestly done that in any monster movie?  Even so, I still felt a little a little affected seeing Rob on the phone with his mother, or hearing him tell Lily that his brother's death was different because "he knew you loved him."  Those were both great little touches amongst the chaos.

Great experience, but I agree with border that the intensity will be diminished upon repeat viewings.

Well you can say that about any monster/horror movie, but I think once you know everything that happens you just won't have as much patience to sit through the shaky-cam stuff and the dramatic moments.  A more traditional film would at least have tits/gore to keep you engaged during downtime.
