A 22-year-old Lewisville man who reportedly works as a professional magician was behind bars Thursday, accused of taking a 9-year-old girl from the Creekside Elementary School campus.

Daniel Catarino Reyes is charged with aggravated kidnapping and was being held on $200,000 bail at the Denton County Jail.

Mr. Reyes reportedly took the girl from the school on Wednesday afternoon, without her parents' permission, and returned her about an hour later, according to a Lewisville Police Department press release. Police were notified by the principal, who already had heard from the parents, Capt. Kevin Deaver said.

Police searched his residence in the 1600 block of Live Oak Drive, where the child is believed to have been taken, on Wednesday night, the press release stated.

The girl was not being named, but KTVT-TV's CBS 11 reported that the girl was asked to be a magician's assistant before she was taken off the property. Her parents told the TV station that she was blindfolded and subjected to videotaping and sexually explicit behavior. They also said school administrators did not know that a stranger had taken her off the property.

Officials at Creekside Elementary deferred comment to the Lewisville Independent School District. LISD spokeswoman Karen Permetti said Mr. Reyes took four children out of class to be assistants, but only three returned.

Ms. Permetti said she did not have enough information to comment on the parents' allegations that administrators failed to notice the child's disappearance, but she said the district is reviewing procedures to ensure that such an event cannot happen again.

Ms. Permetti said Mr. Reyes had performed at the school several times previously.

Mr. Reyes' Web site describes him as an award-winning magician and mime.

Aggravated kidnapping is a first-degree felony carrying punishment of five to 99 years or life in prison.
