Any evilboreons fly?
« on: January 18, 2008, 12:45:24 AM »
I only have a glider license - and do not plan on getting standard pilots license or really gliding over 5,000 ft much - but it is addictive!

Here are some pictures to get you in the mood;

This is a take-off with the tow-prop;

In the air;

I just pulled the release;

I tried to follow his formation but he was too fast and has an engine at least heh;

A little banking;

I usually only stay up on drifsts for 30-45 minutes before I get too bored or too hot...since the craft has no engines or electricity, its gets mega hot in that little glass cockpit......there is a small side door you can open and stick your hand out of for fresh air...I wish I could try sniping long range targets I set up while flying for fun but that would be very illegal me thinks :(

Landing these things is a breeze...the safest part of flying.....getting towed up is the most dangerous part.

Anyone else here fly planes, gliders, etc?

Ever do parasailing? Im a big addict of that too....

I was actually pondering this hobby after watching a Tom Cruise interview. I was wondering how fun it could be if you knew you couldn't pull off any stunts or whatever without winding up dead. Those pics look sweet though.

Just bring a glass of ice water up with you.

Also some guys prefer the gliders with the hi tech instruments and the radar so they can fly above 5,000 ft and cloud level - thats not my gig. I think I would freak out not being able to see the ground....

I like it below the clouds - where you can see the birds flying above the heat drifts, the water bodies and other things that reflect heat for you to catch air on.

I dont wanna look at a radar to see that stuff :(

Just look up "Glider port" in your area - call them and figure out the hours and how much it costs etc to get some rides....

take some rides first to make sure its for you.....when you ride, a real pilot flies with you and unless yer a spazz he will even let you take the stick a few times so you can get a feel for the banking etc...you only have a stick and 2 pedals to deal with so its a breeze....

Once you like ask the people at the glider ports how much their license class is....

once you have a license - you can either buy your own or usually rent there.

Important to remember;

- once you get your license your greatest cost will be getting towed up. A busy gliderport will have one or a few planes taking off and landing over and over all day long towing - if they dont get ready for $$$ expensive towing.

- If you hit some bad nasty winds before you get towed up to the desired altitude - go ahead and pull the line release....tow pilots fucking hate getting jerked around by the kite tied to their ass - YOU DONT WANT TO PISS OFF THE TOW PILOT.

I wanted to join the Air Force when I was a kid, but then I heard that you need to have 20/20 vision. That dream was crushed when I found out that I needed glasses. :(

Pretty sure LASIK surgery is an instant disqualifier for the USAF.

I was up in an open ultralight a few times and was thinking about taking lessons. Then, the owner of the airstrip died. In an ultralight. I said NOTHXKBYE

I'm pretty sure if you meet all other requirements they give you eye surgery.

My former boss was an amateur pilot who built and restored a small 2-seater (not specifically a Cessna but along those lines), and he would take trips back and forth between here and CT quite frequently, I think the farthest he ever flown in a single trip was to Wisconsin. But, he missed the runway on a foggy day, and crashed into the side of someone's house, right into their living room... thankfully he survived with minor injuries (a broken leg... he was back at work 2 days later). Destroyed his plane but he made the cover of Newsday.

Plus, I'm afraid of heights.

Same, yet planes are the one instance where it doesn't bother me.

I'm really keen on going up in a hot air balloon one of these days.
