These kids are 18.  This is the technical school, which is 95% boys. They are insane.

And in the class after that, I had to confiscate a porno mag a student was looking at right in the middle of class (and showing off to his classmates).

Did you look at it after class??   :-*

Today's lessons went like this:

Me: "Yes, hello.  I don't feel well so I'm not coming in.  Bye."

Felt like shit this morning...needed a LOT of sleep.  Felt bad for the kids though, they knew I was supposed to be coming today.   :'(

Yeah, this is a baaaaaaad school.  When I did the re-contracting interview last Tuesday, the interviewer asked me "I notice you talk a lot about your base school in your essay, but you don't talk much about your visiting school.  Could you tell me about it?"  "It's a technical school, I teach seven classes a week to third-year students, and the lessons are much simpler than the ones I teach at my base school."  That's really ALL I could say, because everything else would have been negative.  It's a really terrible school for English teachers to be at because the kids really don't care about English at all, and their levels are so low it's like teaching kindergarten...except some of the kindergartners are yakuza in training.

EDIT: I took a glance at it in class (lol) and then gave it back once the bell rang.

That sounds like the third years I had at one school for two years in a row.  They were so bad I couldn't really do anything and pretty much never went to the classes.  I remember one kid breaking some windows and another acting like a monkey, jumping around and going outside on the balcony and into other classrooms-- on the parents' visiting day.

The porno thing reminds me of my own school days.

-In fifth grade, a bunch of kids got these pens with images of women in bikinis on them.  Turn them over, and the bikinis disappear.  This didn't last long and all the pens got confiscated.  Later on, we all noticed that the principal had them in his shirt pocket for the rest of the year.   :lol

-In high school, maybe 10th or 11th grade, this one kid used to bring porno mags with him to school.  He got caught in one class, but not before the teacher spent the entire period walking near his desk and eyeing the mags sticking out of his books.

Yeah, the kids also play PSP in class, and I'm like "Oh, Monster Hunter...now please put it away."  Which they do, for about two minutes until I'm far away from their desk, then they just take it out from under their desk and start playing again.

Wow, I always used to think Japanese kids were well disciplined, y'know with being afraid of "shame" and all.

Depends on the school.  My base school is great, this is the complete opposite.  It can still be fun to teach here sometimes, 'cuz the kids can do some truly outrageous stuff.

From what you've seen, are the kids really happy? I know it's prevalent in most of Asia, and not just Japan, but from what I've read/heard parents give their kids near impossible standards to live up to and always make them conform to everything and are always trying to get them to study 24/7, seems to me it would make a pretty depressed society, and make it hard for one to be truly happy.

Well, I dunno, man.  I mean, it really depends on the school and the individual students.  From my experience, the kids in my base school are happy.  They've got cheerful dispositions and are generally quite open and friendly.  The kids at the technical school are...different, but I don't see them as being particularly stressed either (of course, none of them are going to university afterwards, so that's probably part of the reason for the lack fo stress).

I imagine you would get a far different answer if you asked someone who taught at a SELHi (Super English Language high school) or a top-ranked school.

EDIT: Synthesizer Patel taught at a high-level high school in Japan, he could probably give a better answer than me.

I've run into that two times.  The first was at a better school with generally much better kids.  This kid, a first year who wasn't particularly bright, was playing his DS in class.  I snuck up behind him and asked him for it, and he put it into his bag and said "I don't have a DS."  I'm not going to do any physical shit to first years, so I waited until the class was over and told the teacher. Then his home room teacher came.  He finally opened up his bag and handed over the DS.  The kid lucked crushed.  A few weeks later, his mother pulled him out of school for "emotional distress" and he went elsewhere.

The second time was from one of the worst third years at the worse school (now it's fine there).  He got busted for having a PSP, and PITCHED A FIT in the teachers' room.  One teacher held him by his arms as he hyperventilated and screamed his head off. That kid was really fucked up.

Generally the worst thing that happens with my kids are passing notes and talking.

I run into that every day when I'm teaching at this particular school, man.  EVERY DAY.  They've been playing Monster Hunter 2 since it came out.  It's either that or Guilty Gear.

I had four students playing Monster Hunter 2 co-op during my last class, and they refused to turn it off because they were apparently at a very tough boss and on the verge of beating it.

No, but I had a few years of Japanese in college.  I can understand most websites (without a dictionary), but I've had little practice in actual conversation.  I could probably become reasonably fluent within a few months of being in Japan, though.

hey i went to not knowing one word of german to speaking conversationally with little problems in 3 months.

i mostly attribute that to having an amazing teacher and a fuck awesome class, but it's amazing how quickly you can learn a language if you really put your all into it.

my writing still kinda sucks, though, but that always takes longer to learn :(

Japanese genes are supposed to be superior.  They must be speaking in math-code.

It's comforting to know that you guys over in Japan are experiencing many of the same problems I face in my schools.

Yes, the JET program has done a fine job of showing me just how fucked up the education biz is and why I would never want to do this as a career.  I feel so damn bad for all the teachers I had that got shit from me and other kids back when I was in school.   :'(
