So about that Star Trek teaser...
« on: January 19, 2008, 04:44:45 AM »
... so I know I've been saying this film is setting a course for disaster and I still think it's the mostly likely outcome, but that teaser was good shit.  People actually cheered when they revealed the hull with the Enterprise lettering.  It's a great teaser.  Kind of has me intrigued, but the writers and talent onboard does not.

looks dumb, what's with the steam and steampunk goggles? if they're not gonna reimagine it back to the 1880s then they might as well go fuck themselves

another big-budget disaster from J.J. Hackbrams

I thought the teaser gave a good sense of the size of the Enterprise and the epic nature of space exploration.  In terms of set design, I don't really see how that stuff wouldn't fit it.

I'm not saying it won't suck - it likely will.  But I thought the teaser was really well done.

If there is some kind of inclusion of current pop-culture in the Kirk future - I will shit in my theater seat and walk out in disgust.  That way, everyone can smell the turd that the movie is while watching it.

"James, how do you know her?"

"I met her on MySpace, Spock.  LOL!"

I heard the Enterprise is being built at Area 51, which sounds kinda dumb.  I guess I'd always assumed it was built out in space since the first shot you see of it in the original ST: The Motion Picture is in the middle of its reconstruction...out in space.

It certainly looks like it's being built on Earth in the teaser.  I think if you go in with the mindset that "so and so seems illogical in the future", this film will fall apart instantly.  From folks welding a spacecraft, to folks making a spacecraft on Earth, to Romulans or whatever going back in time to kill Kirk to what have you.  It's going to be a movie that is not going to sit well with hardcore Trek fans.  I think we can only hope that it's entertaining and the casting is solid.

the Enterprise was always built in space at the Olympus Shipyards, this is obvious to even a casual observer. she's not aerodynamic, she could never land or take off (that's why they fucking have shuttlecraft)

built on earth, what bullshit, guess it's easier for them to put product placement at Area 51

can I call it STINO

I'm a casual observer and I don't even know what the Olympus Shipyards are.  If I do, I've certainly forgotten.  Factoids like that are irrelevant.  You bring up a good, albeit extremely nerdy point (really, try informing casual folks of the aerodynamics of the Enterprise without seeming like a loser), about the Enterprise.  I really hadn't thought about it.  I'm not saying building it on Earth seems smart - it certainly doesn't.  I'm just confirming that it does look like it's built on Earth.

Again, with Trek fans, this film will fall apart instantly.  I think you can really hope that it's entertaining and wide the wave.  Either that or prepare for an epic trainwreck.  I really think it'll be the latter.  Not because the Enterprise is being built on Earth, but because Abrams is extremely hit or miss and almost everything that has leaked from production has sounded dumb.

Folks did cheer for this teaser, by the way.

I'm actually hoping this thing bombs out after its first weekend (good teaser buzz and tons of marketing will guarantee frontloaded success) so they can put Star Trek to rest for awhile.  Redefining what made the show and films great with hip, young TV land talent doesn't really seem like the way to go.

I know Cheebs pops a boner for this movie and good for him - at least Abrams has one fan.

The geeks at AICN are apparently up in arms about how this new ST movie's going to rape canon, but I don't really care.  It's basically a reboot with some connections to the original franchise to try to sate the old fans.  I have basically zero expectations that it's going to be any good (sorry Gay Boy), but I'm gonna go see it anyway since the original series was my favorite (a big part of that was the cast, admittedly).

I am with Willco.  They should just let the thing be dead for a few years and then revive it.  Reboots are fine and dandy, but with Star Trek, where there is already a pretty detailed universe (for TV scifi), why the fuck reboot it with the SAME OLD FUCKING CHARACTERS, especially when many of those old characters were dictionary definition defined by the people that played them?  Shatner is Kirk! Nimoy is Spock!

If they want to revive the franchise (and they want to revive the franchise) they will not succeed by trying to sell us new shitty versions of old classic TV era characters.

The thing is, for most people, Star Trek IS TOS.  The fact that those characters are coming back, even if they're being played by entirely different people, guarantees a big opening weekend, at least.  If the movie is at the very least decent, it's going to do really, really well.

The truth is, 90% of moviegores don't give a shit about Benjamin Sisko or the chick from Voyager.  They know "He's dead, Jim!" "Beam me up, Scotty!" "Where can we find the nuclear wessels?"  That's what they want from Trek, and that's what they're gonna get with this new movie.

Except that they're NOT going to get that, unless they get the cast to do lame Shatner and Nimoy impressions.  Those characters are intrinsically tied to the people that originally played them.  The dude that's Sylar on Heroes is not fucking Leonard Nimoy, thus it is impossible for him to be Spock.  Nobodies aping lines and delivery styles from the original?  I can do that with my nerbo friends!  Why pay theatre prices?  Spock and Kirk in name only.  Maybe Shia could be Kirk III.

You think people aren't used to actors aping other actors' mannerisms, specifically in remakes of old TV shows?  Dude, have you missed the last fifteen years of so of mainstream shitty American cinema?

This movie is going to do really, really well, regardless of quality.  I'd bet on it.

I think it will do well the first week or so.

It's difficult to defend or attack the direction the Star Trek series has taken.  Enterprise blew, so naturally the studios aimed for the folks that are just casual fans with this one.  Frankly, the series was lucky to be as popular as it was in the 90s.  So I think the studio is doing the right thing for the numbers, but the wrong thing for quality.

I dunno, man.  All the Next Generation movies blew, other than First Contact.  Voyager was bad.  Enterprise was worse.  Can you really blame the studio for going back to basics and using a formula that's been proven to work?

Is anyone in this thread NOT going to go see this film?  I mean, to see the original Enterprise on the big screen again, that's something I haven't seen since Undiscovered Country.

I think I have made it clear on several occasions that I do not hold any of the movies in very high regards.  The series as a whole has always meant more than the movies to me.  Movies are only important in times like NOW when there is no series.

Star Trek died once, and it looks like it is going to die a second time.  Maybe it is for the best.  It got a second lease on life with the revival that lead up to TNG, but I think things are on life support now.  I really only care about TOS too, although I do like eps of the later series.  Star Trek is clearly not the sort of property that will benefit from a reset to day 1--it was a television show starring all character actors!  The franchise has been creatively dead for at least a decade.

I don't want to give a nerd eulogy here, but Star Trek, at least for now, is done.  The TV people have jaded the fans, and the film people appear to be well on their way to doing the same.  Unless you spark up interest in a new fanbase of synbioses, this "revival" is going to be stillborn.

I think TVC is right in one way and wrong in the other - for actual Trek fans, this film is going to be an abomination.  This marks the end of Trek for these folks.  Heck, for a lot of older people, whom directly link Shater and Nimoy to the characters, this will be a travesty.  But I think there's a good chance that Abrams could draw a bunch of folks Cheebs age into nu-Star Trek.  And it might successful.

most ST fans I know accept TNG along with TOS, no questions asked. it's only when you get into DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise that it starts being apocryphal.

and yeah, I don't really give much credo to the movies one way or another. Trek is the TV show. The movies are an aside.

I was always a massive Star Trek nerd, and I agree with this post.  Star Trek has been dead for me since the end of DS9.  The last movie was an abomination, and I have no excitement for this one either.
