And T234:

True to its name, the island is much longer than it is wide, jutting out some 118 miles (190 km) from New York Harbor, and varies in width between 12 - 23 miles (19 - 37 km) between the southern Atlantic coast and Long Island Sound.

Anyway, yeah the movie was fuckin awesome. I had never heard of it before going to see it. So I went in cold and unhyped, and was pleasantly surprised. And, as somebody who hasn't really seen to many horror flicks or monster movies, I was jumpin a whole lot during the movie.

That's about as far as I drove (one-way) to bloodwakes. From there, we went an additional ~30 miles.

Then again, I drive 90 miles a day just to get to work (6.75/hr) and back.

It seemed to go down fine. I'm still impressed by the balls it took to have imagery that seemed pulled straight out of a 9/11 tape. And yeah the chicks were hot, fo sho.

And I would really recommend a theater experience for this, MAF.

Yeah, I definitely agree. I really hate to compare this movie to something like Children of Men, but they're two movies that I'm glad I saw in theaters and were both amazing experiences that first time around. Also, Children of Men had that visceral, handheld style in that climactic action scene, much like Cloverfield.

But yeah, I'll stop there with the comparisons. :lol

Vintage aughts boobies in their glorious high-definition perfection only!

I really dug Cloverfield.  The novelty of handheld action will wear off if they regurgitate it for a sequel, but there's so much to this concept left unexplored (and I'm not even talking about The Monster, which I hope remains vague), that I think there are creative ways to tackle the ongoing chronicles of this particular ficitional universe.

I liked Cloverfield, it was kind of like a leaner, darker version of War of the Worlds (made with about a 10th of the budget). And it was maybe the first monster movie that was about the monster. The monster wasn't even that important to the plot, when you think about it. The basic idea was you have this group of people and they're trying to survive in a city that's been thrown into chaos, and let's just see what happens to them. The shaky cam wasn't as annoying as I thought it would be, it makes it seem like a documentary, like you're right there in the middle of the action, instead of just watching it from afar. It wasn't a great movie, but all in all, it was really solid. A lot of people at theater I was at were pissed at the ending, but I didn't mind.

It's funny that you mentioned War of the Worlds, because I made a similar comparison last night.  It's like the good parts of War of the Worlds, before Tim Robbins shows up and brings the movie to a crawl (and before Spielberg takes a dump on the audience with an implausible happy ending).  Just the unraveling of society as something catastrophic and beyond our control happens - from the point of view of regular folks (albeit rich, trendy hipsters!).

At the first of the movie it says that

spoiler (click to show/hide)
the tape was recovered from Central Park. So I'm thinking that means they must not survive.
[close]

But I was still kind of thinking that

spoiler (click to show/hide)
they might pull a Spielberg and find some way to have the four main characters to live happily ever after. Although Malena's head exploding kind of put an end to that line of thinking.  :lol

It's weird for January to not be completely sucking movie-wise this year. Last year the biggest two movies of the month were Stomp the Yard and Epic Movie. Maybe Hollywood will figure out that if they released something actually worth watching in January, people would go to see it. I don't know how good Rambo will do, but $41 Million for Cloverfield is nothing to sneeze at. From what I read, it's budget was only $25 Million (although I imagine they spent more on advertising).
