Who here owns an HDTV or is interested to buy one
« on: August 03, 2006, 12:20:28 AM »
I'm just interested to get your stance on the democratisation of HDTV.

When you got one, what's the model, what made you pick up one video display technology upon another (Plasma, LCD, DLP, CRT, etc...)

Or are you looking to get one soon, if so what interests you?

Or could you be satisfied with a standard CRT set, if so why?

Do you think it still is too expensive? IMO there are some great LCD sets at reasonable prices and it's really a great asset for any gamer. The biggest issue I have is that 480i/480p games often look very poor on these.

Personally I game on this. It's really inexpensive and small, but the picture quality is excellent and I've had no complaints for months. I game on it about 10-12 hours a day sometimes. :P

I bought a CRT last year.  It was a great investment.  I got a CRT because in addition to being affordable, the technology holds up better than LCD and Plasma, it's not stuck in a native resolution and the blacks are actually black.  If you're in the market and don't have a lot of cash, I'd recommend a CRT.  If not, wait out for affordable SEDs.

Well yeah CRT is affordable, but it's heavy and takes a lot of space, and is also limited in the dimension it can come in.

Many recent LCDs are really inexpensive, though. That needs to be said. They're actually affordable, so much that grannies are beginning to buy them to replace their old 19 inches GE TV. :P

I know that blacks are inferior on LCDs due to the limitations of the technology, but honestly it doesn't bother me. Where LCDs can't be beaten though, is in the sharpness, clarity and softness of the picture. That's why I like it so much.

A few weeks ago I played a few of my games on some HDTV CRT again, and I don't think I'll ever want to bother with one of those bulky tubes ever again. What impressed me though is the feeling of depth in 3D games, due to the large tube itself.

I've got one 27" 4:3 Samsung Dynaflat HDTV and a 55" 16:9 RCA Rear Projection HDTV. Both of them have treated me well.

I approve this message.

I'm waiting for the price to go down...WAY down. All I need is a 32inch or so HDTV for college, but even that will cost me $900. Hopefully by the time RE5 comes out (IE, the time I get a 360) HDTV's will be cheaper. :(

I have three HDTVs:  a Sony 57" 16:9 projection, Samsung 30" 16:9 SlimFit CRT and a Samsung 4:3 CRT.

I'm not sure what you mean by CRT "is also limited in the dimension it can come in."
Yes it's heavy, and not anywhere near like a flat panel LCD or projector as far as depth is concerned.

CRTs are the cheapest, and have the best picture quality.  They also don't suffer from burn-in.

If you're worried about space, I would definitely go with a projector.  They're actually very affordable, and their picture brightess is much, much better that it used to be.  And they're extremely portable.  You still may need to have some controlled lighting, though.  My parents just got a projector set up at their place, and it looks amazing.  I used it the other week to play Steel Battalion.  It was a blast playing it on a 100" screen!  :)

The 30" Samsung 16:9 SlimFit CRT will run you about $750 at most places like Circuit City. It looks beautiful, and isn't as deep and heavy as most CRTs (fooled a few of my friends into thinking it was a LCD or plasma at first):

The drawback is that the earlier models had some slight geometry issues.  Mine bends slightly in the top center of the screen, although I never notice it while playing.  Some people have been able to fix this through the service menu.  This problem might have been fixed with the newer models, although I haven't been following it too closely.  But it looks fantastic, and is definitely takes up less space and is much lighter than most CRTs.  My 4:3 CRT was the first one I bought back in 2002 or 2003?  It was a floor model at Best Buy.  I talked them down to a little over $500 if I remember right.

Way to go, I want a slim HD CRT... ;D

I had that TV -- the 30" Samsung -- and it had all kinds of geomtry issues. It warped bad in the lower center, and all the fiddling I could do within the service menu couldn't effectively address it. I finally sold it to may parents and got the 50" Sony Grand WEGA (A10)  rear-projection LCD, and I couldn't be happier -- it's a world of improvement in terms of visual quality.

Yeah, Fry's had the new model A10 50" for $1699 (!!!!) which they had just received THAT WEEK, but they didn't have a new model 42" A10. The old 42" was the SAME PRICE, so I likewise told the 42" to fuck off and bought the 50" instead.

heh, I don't like rear-projection LCDs because you need to change an expensive bulb after a while, and because there's a very visible screen door effect

two days ago I was at Costco and there was one of these latest Sonys and I looked at it but the screen door effect was rather striking

there were also some Samsung DLPs, those look good but I don't exactly like the way DLPs display colors, it looks pale

I have no idea what you're talking about.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_door_effect

Quote
The screen-door effect or fixed-pattern noise (FPN) is a visual artifact of the projection technology use in digital projectors, where the fine lines separating the projector's pixels become visible in the projected image. This results in an image that appears as if viewed through a screen door. It most commonly appears as a grid (hence the name). or sometimes as a hexagonal structure.

I don't really notice the SDE. But my eyes are much better than Jotaro's, so I sit more than two feet away from the screen.

now for an explanation

it's basically due to many LCD sets' low DPI (dots per inch) rate, that's obviously more visible when the LCD panels' picture is projected on a big screen

so the higher the panel's DPI rate is, and the higher its resolution is, that problem gradually disappears over time as technology improves... if you recall early computer LCD monitors from just a few years ago, they were small and their DPI rate was very low, so its pixels contours was very visible, it's not really a problme with recent monitors now... that's why I don't like small low-rez LCD tvs, it's just too visible

also, certain conditions and video sources will show this make this default more visible

with 1080p panels the DPI and resolution is so high that it should completely stop being a bother in any way
