In the internet rating craze, I gave it a 9/10. Probably one of two Gilliam films I can stand, and it's amazing. It's like 1984 except hilarious and with this great art style.

the movie was all right but I don't really get why they went with that ending. it just seemed off. The movie goes back and forth between being serious to being screwy and then you suddenly get to the ending. I saw the criterion edition that has "final cut" written on the front and it says gilliam took scenes from the american and british version (I would not have guessed that while watching) to make the "definitive" version. I remember people talked about how there was a lot of differences between the different versions so I hope I got the right one.

I agree, the movie is fun but I don't get the hype for it.

Seems like you missed one of the points of the film Nintenho. The combination of fantasy and reality was central to the plot, and while the sudden switches are a bit random at times they make perfect sense in context. As the film progresses Lowry's ability to separates fantasy from reality deteriorates to the point where he finally escapes the physical and mental prison of his dystopian society. The trailer of the movie says Brazil is "only a state of mind", and that's how I saw it as well. Lowry finally escaped to a place where no amount of bureaucracy, group think, or fascism could effect him

Tarantino is good, Resorvoir Dogs was probably the first crime movie I saw that felt real. Pulp Fiction wasn't as good in my opinion but Kill Bill, which you could say has no redeeming qualities in writing, was awesome.

what I assumed was that brazil would go and show a clear moral message. Instead, even after extensively showing the backstory of the main character, the movie just shows that a totalitarian society just dehumanizes the human inside of you. I figured it got hyped a lot only because of how detailed the setting of the world was.

that faq was helpful in that it taught me that it was the acid lady's funeral at the end of the movie. the second half was so confusing that I had no idea what was going on. That's one of my major issues with this, why show 50% of the movie as a hallucination/dream? we get that a world like that would be fucked up, so try to develop the character trying to "better" himself. at least that's what I'd like.

PD, I am criticizing the story decisions in those movies. I'm not making comparisons to the cinematography they use because I really couldn't care about that.

I don't think nintenho is capable of any form of objective analysis. The bulk of his criticisms boil down to SUX BECAUSE IT DIDN'T DO WHAT I WANTED IT TO.
