Official HEAVY METAL RADIO topic (NOW WITH A FUCKING PODCAST)
« on: January 23, 2008, 03:22:57 AM »
Well, as per Willco's suggestion I've made an official thread about this.

My weekly metal mania radio show is held on Wednesday nights from 9:00-11:00PM Eastern time (that's 6:00-8:00 Pacific).

We play a wide range of metal, including: Black, Death, Heavy, Power, and Thrash

It's not an alltogether serious show, so don't be surprised to hear us having some fun if you tune in.

Speaking of tuning in:
Here's our webstream: mms://streams.kings.edu/WRKC_FM
Here's our request line: 570-208-5821 (the number is public on the website, so I don't give a fuck about posting it here)
You can IM us at: smoothjams104 on AIM

We take requests and are happy to play what we can find.

I'll post again tomorrow at the start of the show to remind people.

-EDIT MOTHERFUCKERS-
1) WE NOW HAVE FUCKING WEBSITE.
http://www.smoothjams104.com

2) WE NOW HAVE A FUCKING PODCAST
Go to the "Weekly Heavy Metal Show Smoothcast" section and subscribe to the fucking podcast there.

The show went wonderfully tonight, other than the fucking right audio channel not going out over the air.

There's got to be a fucking connection loose someplace or something. It cut out on us last week when we were in the middle of playing, and it was out again pretty much all night tonight.

Ecro, do you know if Danzig ever re-recorded any of his old Misfits material?  I was looking at YouTubes of the band that called itself Misfits after Danzig left to form Samhain and they suck.  The original Misfits recordings aren't that hot either...which is weird since the songs structurally are pretty solid and cool.

Do you guys put any prep time into the show?  When I was doing a radio show freshman year we didn't really, it was still awesome.  :-*

There's no good rerecordings that I know of.  I love that old Misfits shit, but it is tough to listen to after listening to like, pristinely recorded music.

The prep time is usually pretty minimal. About the only thing I may do is decide which Manowar songs I want to play at 10:00.

This week though, we're getting some stuff ready beforehand. It should be neat.

Damn.  I searched through iTunes and all the covers by other bands are pretty bad (other than Metallica's).

Yeah, I know.  It's kinda heartbreaking.

They kind of have two modes of songs.  One is the typical punk, pre-hardcore kind of thing, as seen in Die Die My Darling and Green Hell and Earth AD, and then there's a bunch of songs reminiscent of pop ballads of the 50s played at breakneck speeds, like I Turned Into A Martian, Hatebreeders, Nike A Go Go, and a bunch more.  I believe their first album was more of the latter, and the second album the former, but it always struck me as neat, since their lyrics stayed the same.

I first came across their music listening to Metallica's Garage, Inc. so I picked up their two "best of" collections sight unseen  (or noise unheard, lawl), and I ended up being really disappointed at the sound quality of all their recordings.  In all honesty after hearing the Garage, Inc. covers I was expecting something akin in quality to The Ramones' early stuff. :(

garage inc is great  because it's not their music

i love everything before the black album though.

the misfits are awesome

they used to only play on halloween in one club

the leader of the band (jerry only, not danzig) is the heir to a hobby knife fortune.  like higher grade xacto, and he was a bit of an engineer himself (he worked for his dad during the day and was a punk at night) so he had money and talent to design their own guitars and the like.

if you pick up the EXCELLENT book American Hardcore (extremely biased) it has a huge chapter on them.  it's a GREAT read.  Far better than the documentary movie which came out a few years ago.

If this is the case, why does all of their music sound like it was recorded in a rusty septic tank, into a telephone answering machine?

Again, I don't have any of their CDs. I think there's some Poison and Ratt in the back. Any songs in particular that you want to hear? I'll see if I can find them.

I'm also pretty sure I've seen a few W.A.S.P. CDs in the back, though I don't know any of their music.

Winger - Headed for a Heartbreak
Ratt - Back for More
Poison - Talk Dirty to Me, Every Rose Has Its Thorn

I'd also like to request some Alice Cooper....Feed My Frankenstein, specifically.

Does Dream Theater count as metal?

Some requests, take 'em or leave 'em, your show, hoooooolllllaaaaa.  :-*

Megadeth - Last Rites/Loved to Death or KIMBABIG
Metallica - Frayed Ends of Sanity
Pantera - Cowboys from Hell or Domination

Also may I suggest

Death - Pull The Plug

It's from the Leprosy album which was release in '88 although the Live in LA version is super awesome cause of the intro.  :-*

Well, power metal sounds nothing like black or death metal.

One of the main characteristics of power metal is the 'clean' vocals. There's not really any of the gruff growling that's typical of death metal.

Yes.com, through some wizardry I've yet to figure out, has a partial tracklisting of what we played tonight:
Quote
#
The Black Dahlia Murder - To A Breathless Oblivion 30.01.2008 9:07pm
Metallica - Leper Messiah 30.01.2008 9:16pm
Black Sabbath - Electric Funeral 30.01.2008 9:42pm
Dio - We Rock 30.01.2008 9:53pm
Motorhead - Ace Of Spades 30.01.2008 9:57pm
Dark Tranquillity - Lost To Apathy 30.01.2008 10:24pm
Beneath The Massacre - Society's Disposable Son 30.01.2008 10:37pm
Iron Maiden - Aces High 30.01.2008 10:44pm
Soilwork - The Pittsburgh Syndrome 30.01.2008 10:48pm
Pantera - Domination 30.01.2008 10:51pm

We played more than that, but Yes.com didn't capture everything.

Well, the first half of our show tonight got screwed up by a basketball game, but we came back with a vengeance.

We also got the mono-only, only-one-audio-channel problem fixed.

We're now rocking out with our cocks out.

I'm also going to look into obtaining a domain name and setting this up as a weekly podcast or something. Anyone that might be able to help by providing info on that would be much appreciated.

Assuming I get the site, I'm going to use SurpassHosting as my webhost. Their built-in control panel offers some nice installable PHP scripts and whatnot, but I wanted to make sure I ended up using something good.

I may end up going with Drupal or something, as I hear you can easily tweak that to allow podcasting. Still no idea if it's the best option, though.

Ecro, if you can devote a show to educating me how to tell black, death, and power metal apart, I will let you burn down my stave churches any day of the week.

Power metal is usually pretty fast with squeeling guitars and fast rhythms. Dragonforce counts as power metal. And if I'm correct, the Power Rangers themesong can also be counted as power metal... to give you a clear indication.

black metal usually has cookiemonster (growling) vocals, heavily bass oriented and kinda repetetive instrumentals in the background. It's not a rarity to find a song that has the same melody playing for the entire song.

death metal is the more screaming and squeeling vocals stuff.

that was my beginners analysis on the genres.
