Terry Gilliam's new film shut down, crew laid off.
« on: January 23, 2008, 07:51:25 PM »
from the terrific Twitchfilm.net
Quote
From the sounds of this they were pretty much in the mid point of the work they needed Ledger for which leaves producers in a tough spot:  they can either re-cast the part and start again pretty much from scratch, re-doing all of his location shooting which would send production costs skyrocketing, or they can shut down and hope their insurance policies will cover the losses.

Damn, that sucks.

Heath Ledger dies, and so does Terry Gilliam's career.

How is this the end of the man's carrier?  This film started production last december.  They are not talking about TDK, btw.

How is this the end of the man's carrier?

Gilliam hasn't been able to get the financing for a personal film in years. And now one of his key actors is dead, which, among other things, means reshoots that are impossible on the budget he has.

Who knows if and when he'll have another opportunity?

What a fucking bummer :( The movie sounded so Gilliam, too.  And his old writing partner was doing it with him (the same writer from brazil and Baron Munchausen)

Brothers Grimm was awful.  He has had a real string of bad luck in the past few years.  Real genius though.

Brothers Grimm was a work-for-hire film. This movie was to be a real personal movie, with his old Brazil writer he hasnt worked with for 20 years. And it had a damn big budget for Gilliam, all thanks to the lead Heath Ledger, Ledger got the investments. Thats a lot of money Gilliam has wasted now, he'll be hard pressed to get another personal film greenlit now....

Though Johnny Depp has said he is still very willing to do Don Quixote with Gilliam if Gilliam ever gets it going again and Depp is a big star....

Johnny Depp + Gilliam would be gold.  It could work.  They could probably even use a significant amount of the already shot footage as long as their rewrites are tight enough.

I would prefer Don Quixote :(  I doubt we will ever see that one

Perhaps you've all come to this conclusion already but here is something a little more firm this project will be going ahead. Don't mean to turn this thread into tidbit central.... Just a resolution. People have bumped threads for weaker purposes :punch

We could get the script and do it EB style.  FoC could direct (unless we've got other film students here) and we could do auditions via youtube.  :hyper
