To be fair, the original Koepp draft for Spider-Man prior to when Raimi was hired was a downright abomination and one of the worst blockbuster scripts to be peddled around Hollywood.  Raimi was basically hired with the job to work with the script as is, and how he managed to edit and re-write it into something actually watachable (shut the fuck up, TVC) is kind of amazing.  Any kind of sense he had with the series was kind of lost after the sequel, though.

i remember reading about this from the bullpen bullitens in marvel comics

he was going to do something with tom cruise and the whole spiderman thing was going to be metaphor for puberty with spider webs as nocturnal emissions etc
