Evilbore's views on piracy?

Just curious what the consensus on the Bore regarding piracy is, after my discussion with Himu.

option 2

Re: Evilbore's views on piracy?
« Reply #2 on: January 27, 2008, 08:10:22 PM »
I went with option three. I download unlicensed anime (Gundam 00) and buy it when it's released here. However, I do import unlicensed music and games from Europe and Japan.

Overall, I'm anti-piracy, even though I download my weekly Gundam 00 fansub.

Option 2. I only pirate music and anime. If they're good I'll buy them. However, if I really really like something, like Radiohead...I already know I don't need to pirate in order to know it's good, I'll like it either way.

usually 2/3, most of the time I never get around to spending my money on the stuff I get later tho

Anime wise I download fansubs pretty often, hellsing ultimate for instance takes months to get here after being released in japan and the fansubs are out in a week otherwise Id have to wait even longer

geneon is fucked now so they might not come at all

as for other stuff yeah Im an evil pirate mostly

Option 3.

I hardly ever pirate stuff anymore, but I did recently download a bunch of DVD screeners for movies that weren't playing around here, as well as the entire MST3K series, most of which still isn't out on DVD.

Between 1 and 2, though not for moral reasons. Downloading music is such a simple task at this point that its my standard practice, and I rarely if ever dole out money after the fact. Games are a more complicated process, so I never got into that. Same with movies. I assume that if I never took the time to become more efficient or knowledgeable about pirating, I would never pay for anything.

No excuses for it. I do what I do because I can.

I pirate as often as possible.  Especially when my friend's mother goes to China and comes back with Photoshop CS3 for $10.

I don't pretend that I'm some revolutionary that feels that all information deserves to be free.  Personally, I'd rather buy bootleg software from a Chinese merchant who will buy a bag of grain than buy the $700 Photoshop suite where most of the money goes to marketing, fancy box art work, and enough money to land on the CEO's desk so he can buy fake tits for his 18 year old mistress called Kandi or Eva or whatever.

I'm a fucking humanitarian.

i believe it's morally wrong, but i do little morally wrong things every day, so what the hey. i buy all my games, movies, and music -- eventually -- but if something is unavailable in a conveniently purchasable format (meaning i don't need to jump through a ridiculous number of hoops or pay an obscene ebay price to procure it), or if it is something that i intend to purchase when released, i'll pirate the hell out of it.

or, as tvc said, it's something i'd NEVER pay for, but want to listen to/view/play so i can mock it on the intarweb.

I had to leave to go to the doctor's office so I didn't get a chance to fill in my option, which was 3.  I admit that I d/l stuff that would otherwise be unavailable to me (for example, fansubs of really old anime like Ideon and Dancougar, or stuff that will likely never see R1 release like Turn A Gundam).  If something is available in Region 1, though, I WILL buy it.  I also refuse to pirate games, since I basically live in the gaming mecca of the world.

That said, if/when Ideon, Dancougar, and Turn A become available on R1 DVD, I am there.  I'm a collecting whore.

The only games I really pirate are PS1 games, the majority of which I probably already purchased in the past.

If there's a PSP game I want, and it leaks before release, I will pirate it and then buy it when it is available.  The last few PSP purchases I have made are still in their wrapping, actually.  If it's a shit PSP game I am playing to see how terrible it is (re: Brooktown High), I won't pay for it.  You don't get the money if I want to play your game for purely ironic purposes.

For gaming, I tend to only pirate PSP games. Playing a game (ISO) through your memory stick just has too many advantages (shorter and faster load times, saves battery life, easier to swap games, etc.). I usually purchase DS titles, but I sometimes download roms to try before I buy.

QFT

Perfect fucking handheld and Sony is getting fucked over on it.

I really try not to download anything, but the temptation is way too great.  I buy things that I love though and I don't pirate games unless they're old and I can't find them.

Music seems to be my biggest problem.   :-\  Although I definitely buy the cd if I really like it because the volume/quality sucks too much when I download it most times.

Actually, not at all.  Look at it this way:  Sony has been trying to get their shitty, shitty memory stick format to take off for almost a decade.  What was the thing that finally made it so memory sticks are ALWAYS sold out at my local Circuit City?  Yep.

Sony makes bank on the systems, and they make EVEN MORE on the memory stick market.  Sony could have squashed the homebrew market by now, but they really have little reason to.  I think anyone with half a brain knows that nothing on the PSP is going to be a sales legend.  Piracy *is* their market.

I'm between the first and second option. I'm not going to refrain from buying anything forever, but I also don't buy everything I like either.

I own all the Hanson albums, the majority of my Billy Joel albums are legit, but probably half of my Less Than Jake discography is burned. Everything I have from Something Corporate, Jack's Mannequin, and Reel Big Fish is burned. I love all those bands.

I have all the Grey's seasons on DVD, but my season 2 was on DVD-R's for a long time until Ecro got me the legal version for my birthday. None of my Star Wars movies are legal copies, and though I FUCKING LOVE them, I don't plan to buy legal copies.

I'd might buy more legit CDs if I had more disposable income, but the artists really don't get that money anyway. I'd probably sooner spend the money on t-shirts or concert tickets, which the band sees more profit on anyway.

I've pirated TV shows but I just got a DVR and now it's really easy to record what I want.  It's like going into a supermarket where everything is free..after a week.  While torrents are like going to a flea market where there's a guy with bad english who you're having trouble understanding if he has exactly what you want and how fast he can get it.  it's the same same shit, but with different sacrifices.

For music, I honestly don't pirate that much since I'm not into listening to music by itself very much for some reason.  For movies and TV shows, I have pirated a lot that I would consider worth renting but I buy the ones that I would buy if I didn't have access to torrents.

The RIAA is the only org I don't feel even a little pang of hurt about stealing from.  The retail music industry is so fucking crooked that it would require the equivalent of the French Revolution to make me consider buying a CD from a recording artist again.  Even worse, the RIAA's harmful pricing practices have even affected the price of non-RIAA CD prices, since record stores are aware they can mark up, say, Dischord releases to RIAA prices, and Johnny Record Buyer wouldn't notice.  Fuck the RIAA.  Steal from them.

Back when I cared about such things, it was a blanket 10 bucks per CD, I think.

And I just checked, that still is the price.  And how many times has the price of major label CDs gone up in the past 17 years?  And Dischord not once?
