Quantum of Solace...this title doesn't work for a Bond movie.
« on: January 28, 2008, 12:51:04 AM »
The average moviegoer is too dumb to know what Quantum means outside of Quantum Leap.  Quantum of Solace sounds like the type of Indie fare Gay Boy would masturbate over, featuring Ellen Page as a genius teenager named Solace who decides to enter university and study quantum physics, leaving her jock boyfriend behind to work at a grocery store when he fails to get a sports scholarship.  The emotional struggle that ensues between her new, smart friends and her old high school "normal" pals would be both hilarious and heartrending.

*shrug* There's a lot of shitty titles for good things. Its horribly regular to the point where I don't have enough fury to divvy up anymore.

They took it from a short story by Ian Fleming, yet the movie has nothing to do with the short story.  Pretty dumb. :/

Hm, what if Quantum of Solace IS some sort of Doomsday Device in the new Bond movie?  Do you guys remember the Goldeneye satellite in Goldeneye (which was named after Ian Fleming's house, lulz)?

Goldeneye kind of sounds like Goldfinger, which has already been established as an appropriate Bond title.

Quantum of Solace kind of sounds like something that would give your Paladin +3 to Charisma.

Brosnan pretty much turned me off of Bond.  Outside of Goldeneye, he really was the worst Bond, and tragically, it wasn't even his fault.

Best Bonds:

1. Timothy Dalton 9.75/10
2. Sean Connery 9.74/10
3. Daniel Craig 9.73/10
4. George Lazenby 7/10
5. Woody Allen 4.5/10
6. Pierce Brosnan 2.53/10
7. Roger Moore 1.5/10

Timothy Dalton DOES get too much hate.  As a matter of fact, I would say Pierce Brosnan is a good counterpoint to him.

Brosnan:  Definitely good as the Bond character.  Arguably as close to the stereotypical Bond as ANYONE else.  Unfortunately, all of his movies, Goldeneye aside, are shit because of the total and complete Hollywoodization of the franchise, with distinguished mentally-challenged plots and terrible writing.

Dalton:  Probably the worst at playing Bond as a character, but he ranks higher in my ranking because despite starring in some tepid Bond movies, they weren't AS TERRIBLE as the Brosnan movies.

Dalton (mediocre movies, terrible bond) > Brosnan (terrible movies, great bond)

I liked the way Dalton portrayed Bond.  If you hated that grittier portrayal, you're not going to like Casino Royale since Craig is very much a spiritual succesor to Dalton (even moreso than Connery), while I thought Brosnan was a Bond in the Roger Moore tradition.

At this point, I think it is really impossible to state a "best bond film."  So many decades.  I would only take it seriously if you were saying "best Bond of [so-and-so] decade."

Well, I don't have as high an opinion of the Bond films as Solo does (I think, I'm not sure what he thinks other than being a huge fan).  I think half of them are out-and-out dreck.  I'll just say it's the best Bond film since The Living Daylights and leave it at that.

I wouldn't say I am a super fan. I can view these films very objectively, but my mom LOVED them, so I grew up seeing them repeatedly.

But so far, this is REALLY well done, in all respects.

The one huge minus is that the series is still a whore to its financial masters. We know what brand of car Bond drives.  We know who makes his cell phone.  As many sponsors as a football game.  I don't need BLATANT advertisements in my movies.

Ehhhh, this movie is requiring some rather large leaps of logic.  Bond's shenanigans int he parking lot in the bahamas breaks suspension of disbelief.  Are we supposed to believe he got so lucky as to fall into the web of someone important to his cause?  By the numbers, that is doubtful.

I always assumed he'd targeted that guy from the start because he knew he was involved in the case, maybe from MI6 files or something.  Sorry, it's been like a year and a half since I saw it.

Suspension of disbelief is a pre-requisite for watching Bond movies, even one that hews closer to "realism" (lol) like this one does.

The world moved on yet Casino Royale was the biggest Bond movie ever boxoffice wise...? Also in total Casino Royale out-grossed all 3 Bourne movies. I don't see how the world moved on.

I agree, Bond worked best in the Cold War era.  The Soviets and Comintern clones made the Bond films.

Casino Royale is the first non Cold War Bond film done well (Goldeneye's plot is based on the actions performed by the characters in the Cold War) but I agree with Eric P, a lot had to be changed.

I think I am somewhat creatively opposed to the whole remolding a stock character for modern cinema every 5 years or so.  Casino Royale is definitely a fun little movie, but it seems, I dunno, creatively dishonest to call this Bond when it only bears that name, really, because of the guaranteed dollar signs it entails.

But yes, good movie.

Casino Royale is just as good as the Bourne films IMO. I don't have a preference because Ultimatum kicked my ass pretty well.

Then again, I'm a Bond fanboy. I even vaguely like every film in a way except for Die Another Day. Even Octopussy.

But yeah, Casino Royale is in my top three Bond films ever, and Daniel Craig could end up being the best Bond.

It's like that Borges story with the giant impossibly detailed map that eventually becomes so detailed that it is an effective simulacrum "blanket" covering the land it details.  If followed to its absurd end, by your logic, every movie ever can retroactively considered a James Bond movie.
