Why would anyone want to play a game called "Call of Duty"?
« on: January 28, 2008, 07:28:06 PM »
In the first place, "duty" as a concept is deeply repellent to me, and all other right-thinking people.  We do things because we want to, not out of some misguided sense of obligation.  In the second place, if you were the sort of person who ascribes moral weight to the "call of duty", wouldn't the title just remind you that you shouldn't be wasting your time playing video games?

So you've never done anything that you didn't actually want to do? Even get up early in the morning when you really just wanted to stay in bed?

Why would I just want to stay in bed?

Because you've only gotten fours of sleep, the bed is warm, and your head is heavy.

And it was just an example. There are plenty of others.

I only got four hours of sleep last night, but I still got up in the morning.  Because I wanted to.

I didn't decide to play it because of the name.

Shouldn't the name be enough to dissuade you, though?

Medals would do nothing but clutter up my room and make it harder to find other, actually useful things.

Again, medals have no use or value to me, so why would I want to earn them?

Do you mean "Call of Final Fantasy"?  I hear they are making a licensed James Bond version called "Bond of Fantasy" which I think sounds delightfully kinky.

I guess the right thinking people only use "duty" when they want to round up cannon fodder to send on a "Call of Oil" mission?

Aren't they pretty much the same thing?
