"ADV Cancels 37 Titles
Anime Offerings on 'Indefinite Hiatus'
Canceled

January 28, 2008

In a letter to retailers ADV Films has identified 37 anime properties including Devil May Cry, Gurren Lagann, and Pumpkin Scissors that are "on indefinite hiatus, effective immediately." The list includes virtually all of the properties that ADV has announced since its financing deal with the Sojitz Corporation (see "Japanese Investment Bulks Up ADV") in late June of 2006. The properties that ADV has announced (and released) since then are from a variety of anime studios but they were all licensed through the ARM Corporation, a subsidiary of Japan Contents Investment, an investor group that included the Sojitz Corporation, the Development Bank of Japan and KlockWorx. In its letter to retailers ADV explained: "ADV has suspended certain elements of its former alliance with ARM Corporation, which financed the acquisition of these titles. ADV is working closely with various constituencies with the goal of restoring most if not all of these properties to our release schedule at a later date to the extent possible."

The list includes properties that have already been released in their entirety such as Nerima Daikon Brothers, Guyver, and 009-1, series such as Pumpkin Scissors, Kurau Phantom Memory, and Red Garden that have only been partially released, and eagerly awaited anime such as Devil May Cry, Gurren Lagann and 5 Centimeters per Second that have been announced for later this year. The complete list of ADV anime properties on hiatus is:

009-01
5cm Per Second
Ah! My Goddess: Flights of
Fancy
Air Gear
Air Movie
Air TV series
Best Student Council
Blade of the Phantom Master
Comic Party Revolution

Kanon TV Series
King of Bandit Jing: 7th Heaven
Kurau Phantom Memory

Welcome to the NHK

Coming on the heels of Geneon's departure (see "Geneon Ankles American Anime Scene") the ADV announcement is more bad news for the reeling North American Anime Industry. For the past few years ADV has been the number two anime company in the North America, with a solid 12-13% share of the anime DVD market. Recently though ADV has been showing signs of stress. It has pulled its support from its industry-leading collection of anime clubs and two weeks ago announced that it would cease publication of Newtype USA (see "Newtype USA Ending"). The collapse of ADV's deal with ARM does not necessarily mean the end of one of the trailblazing American anime companies, which was founded in 1992. ADV still has an extensive library of titles including the ever-popular Neon Genesis Evangelion. Still the fate of ADV subsidiaries such as The Anime Network, the Newtype successor PiQ (see "Newtype Successor Broadens Focus"), and the ADV manga publishing program that includes the bestselling Yotsuba&! manga remains in the balance as does the future of one of the pioneering powerhouses of the American anime market."

Wow, Gurren cancelled? ADV IS PISSED.

I doubt its my fault, i've spent near thousands in Anime. Red Garden looked promising...Le Chevalier D'Eon looked neat too, and thats not completely out either.

Its clear Gurren was meant to be the major F U of the bunch. I hope some Anime "Fans" straighten up and fly right.

Not my fault either, I have bought fucktons of anime (admittedly, I wait for sales most of the time, but doesn't everyone?), I have never pirated licensed stuff, and I've bought a ton of crappy and cool mecha stuff to support the fandom.

The blame for this lies squarely on Himuro's shoulders.  He's probably watching pirated ADV anime (Full Metal Panic) as we speak, while reading pirated ADV manga (Yotsuba&!, which he didn't even know was licensed).

I was going to buy Gurren Lagann okay? Get off my case, Ichi. You know just as much as I do that barely anyone buys anime period. So don't put the blame solely on me!

Plus, anime in america was doomed to have a crash. They oversaturated the market thinking everone was going to buy every 9999 anime titles they brought over here, and aside from the absolute RICH fucks like Morphix, no one really gives a shit.

I used to buy a lot of anime. Now my interest in the genre is reserved to Gundam, other quality mecha shows, Leiji Matsumoto, Ghibli, Satoshi Kon and anything I deem "smart" (Gankutsuou, Stand Alone Complex, etc.).

Look at the titles of those shows. Who, aside from internet UBER GEEKS, could possibly cultivate an interest in PUMPKIN SCISSOR TWINS? This has less to do with piracy and more to do with the gravy train slowing to a stop. Try marketing and not just drift netting Japanese television next time.

Anime is a niche hobby. "lots" aka 10k people

That's about the size of a big anime convention, and there's a lot more animu fans in the US than that.

But hey, you don't care.  Go ahead and kill what you profess to love.

I "pirate" one piece manga and have been "pirating" one piece manga since 2004. however, i buy one piece manga in the states as well.
I "pirated" beck manga, prior to being licensed some of which I have domestically. they STILL haven't caught up to the point I was at when it was licensed.
I "pirated" deathnote manga, prior to being licensed, some of which I have domestically
I "pirated" 20th century boys, prior to being licensed, but the manga creator is a git who refuses to let them release 20th Cent in the States until they're done releasing his amazing manga Monster
I "pirated" Monster manga, prior to being licensed,  and own most of it domestically.

So on. However, with manga I tend to pick up random stuff off the shelf that looks intersting, unlike anime since it tends to be much cheaper. Through this I have been introduced to Tezuka Otomo's Buddha, Yoshihiro Tatsumi's The Push Man and Other Stories, and Abandon the Old in Tokyo.

Suck my nuts. I support the manga industry proudly.

It's not a popular seller in either region. In Japna it's stupidly expensive and no one buys it except otakus. In America, it's a niche hobby where only a few buy the stuff and the market is oversaturated with shit.

No one has the anime network. No one except otakus buy Newtype. Watching anime from ADV's site is the same thing as watching anime on youtube which is the same thing as downloading a whole series.

You're calling me a thief, but you sure are being emotional about it! You not buying these titles until the companies go over is practically the same thing!

Dude, you loudly and proudly state "I steal shit!"  That pretty much gives me the right to make fun of you for stealing shit.

BTW, my house has the Anime Network, don't give me that.  You're making poor excuses because you're ignorant about how to go about acquiring shit legitimately and it's falling flat.

Also, uh, you are an otaku.

And

YouTube =/= official ADV website =/= torrenting shit

I'm not an otaku. An otaku is something who lives for a certain thing. I rarely watch anime as it is.

I'm not making up excuses at all. I don't give a shit. No one I know has the anime network. I have satelitte and don't have that shit.

Get off my balls when practically every single anime fan on the internet pirates.

I say I STEAL SHIT because it annoys your petty overly sensitive ass.

No, it's too much fun to watch your reactions when confronted with the fact that you're a thief.

And yes, you're an otaku, dude.  You played Persona 3 and pretended to be a Japanese high school boy.  You also watch a fuckload more anime than I do.

Exactly. It's like I said. Oversaturation. They think we are willing to buy these piece of shit?

I'm sure this does play a part, but come on.  It's all the people downloading anime that are the cause of this.  Your typical anime geek IS an internet uber geek, and it is ridiculously easy to find and download fansubbed shows, DVD rips, or just watch something on Youtube or a similar video site.

I played Persona 3 because I could shoot myself in the head and summon Persona, and fight awesome rpg battles. How does that make one an otaku?

It's too much fun? You're just making yourself look even more overly sensitive than in the past. You're getting on my case when everyone pirates anime, and you blame me for the industry's demise when I even OWN the series I have "pirated" in the past. You say I pirated these series when I was watching them well before they were licensed. Perhaps you're just a nub?

Well yeah. It's true for both parts. But acting like it's JUST the pirates is stupid.
