It's not who I am at all. Used to be when I was a teenager, when I was obsessed with Japan? Yes. Now? No. Anime is just a hobby among other hobbies, which I just recently started to pick up again.

Until the past week I watched only one anime on a regular basis. Before then, I think 2004 was the last time I watched an anime on a regular basis. I think that hardly qualifies as an otaku. I watch more live action than anime. An otaku is someone who watches anime and ONLY anime and bases their life around it.

There's a difference between a fan, and an obsessed freak.

I "pirate" one piece manga and have been "pirating" one piece manga since 2004. however, i buy one piece manga in the states as well.
I "pirated" beck manga, prior to being licensed some of which I have domestically. they STILL haven't caught up to the point I was at when it was licensed.

So on. However, with manga I tend to pick up random stuff off the shelf that looks intersting, unlike anime since it tends to be much cheaper. Through this I have been introduced to Tezuka Otomo's Buddha, Yoshihiro Tatsumi's The Push Man and Other Stories, and Abandon the Old in Tokyo.

You don't have to put "pirated" in quotation marks.  Licensed or not, you downloaded scans.  That's called PIRACY.  

Manga is much, much better and more diverse in its offerings compared to the dreck that's on TV nowadays.  Even the limited selection of stuff that gets brought out in English.

I buy manga all the time.  It's cheaper here and I'm taking advantage of that.  But buying anime in Japan?  FORGET IT.  You know why so much stuff is up on the internet so quickly?  Because DVD prices are insane.  6000-8000 for a fucking DVD with like 3 episodes on it.  And the executives say "I NO UNDERSTAND.  WHY THEY IS PIRATE?"  Yeah, suck my nuts.  Who's really the pirate here?

It doesn't matter where you live.  An otaku is nothing more than a fanboy/girl obsessed with SOMETHING (doesn't have to be anime) and generally has social issues and problems having a normal life outside his or her "hobby."  It's a generally negative word that American idiots decided to take on as a loan word and use positively.  And then with shows like Densha Otoko, the "otaku" lifestyle took on a new popularity of its own in Japan.

GL = Gurrenn Lagann?  It was finished up by a few fansub groups.  I don't think the quality was as good as the previous groups, but it was decent enough.
