I am trying to put together my 10 TEN FAVORITE FILMS list
« on: January 30, 2008, 11:48:51 PM »

But I can only think of 8 right now.

Remember: Favorite=! best. The Godfather is a better film than To Kill a Mockingbird, but if I had to choose a favorite of mine personally I'd pick Mockingbird. This is a list of films that resonate best with me, in terms of me liking them, identifying with the themes, being greatly impressed with certain aspects of the film such as writing, etc

1. To Kill a Mockingbird
2. Rear Window
3. The Godfather
4. Imitation of Life
5. It's a Wonderful Life
6. The Good the Bad and the Ugly
7. Goodfellas
8. Shawshank Redemption
9. ?
10. ?

Candidates for the last two spots: Apocolypse Now, Raging Bull (review coming soon), Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Paper Chase, Spartacus

And The 400 Blows.  It is like the awesome french equivalent of the shitty Hollywood sentimentalist flicks that you and Cheebs lick each others' assholes to.

400 Blows is awesome and it sounds like a gang bang flick.  I just rewatched it and Days of Heaven and I think Days of Heaven is the best looking film ever.  TVC (and me and ichi and all film lovers) is partial to the Third Man so look that up as well.

Well, I'm not sure how I'd rate Days of Heaven. It is indeed a great looking film, but I like cities and shadow and The Third Man is like having someone jam a bowling pin against my prostate in that regard.

I don't get the point of this thread.  Do you just want us to list like 10 movies we love to watch?  I don't do lists, so I wouldn't rank this shiz, but the movies that come to mind immediately as favorites:

The Great Silence
Robocop
The Empire Strikes Back
Once Upon a Time in the West
The Maltese Falcon
The Duellists
Night and the City
La Leggenda del Pianista sull'Oceano
Red Beard
Touchez Pas Au Grisbi
Raging Bull
The Conformist
Rififi
Miracle in Milan
Leave Her to Heaven

Those are like...15?  I dunno, they're the first that came to mind.  THIS IS NOT A LIST, just a selection.  You should watch all those.

Yeah, I have officially retired from doing lists.  I've just seen too much, and it is hard to put together a list of ten favorites.  I need more selective criteria.

The Middlebrow Passage: The tale of a washed-up, alcoholic ship's captain (Tommy Lee Jones) who is forced by circumstances into the Triangle Trade, and how he redeems himself through is friendship with a captured African slave (Will Smith).

They turn back to free the slaves, but fight a pitched battle against a privateer on their way home.  As Smith lays dying in Jones' arms, Jones pledges to stay in Africa and care for Smith's distinguished mentally-challenged brother (Forrest Whittaker Michael Clarke Duncan Tyler Perry).

With a Tom Hanks cameo as Abe Lincoln in the dream sequence.  Soundtrack by Paul Simon and the adopted children of Angelina Jolie.

1. The Road Warrior
2. Apocalypse Now
3. Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings
4. 2001: A Space Odyssey
5. Once Upon a Time in the West
6. The Godfather
7. This is Spinal Tap
8. Blade Runner
8. Lost Horizon
10. Videodrome

I haven't really sat down to think about it much, but really like these 10 movies a lot. I like movies that have a sort of mythic quality to them (Road Warrior, Apocalypse Now, OUATITW, etc).

Yes, it is sad, and is an accurate depiction of the content of a typical Mupepe.com thread.  I can see why you still hang out here despite being constantly abused and ridiculed for your fey-like appearance and jejune pranks.

Cheebs where are you? I'm in the library, using a SHITTY Mac

Ichi: I couldn't help but think of something you said as I watched Raging Bull. After I said I liked Cinderella Man you argued that it was just another cliche biopic, where the protagonist faces an obstacle, rises to the top, falls to the bottom, then is brought back to the top with the help of a strong female love interest. Raging Bull is like the opposite of that type of story. Not only does the protagonist fail to rise from the ashes, but his jealous obsession over his "love interest" becomes one of the factors of his demise. I remember Am Nintenho said La Motta wasn't particularly likable as a character, and he was right. But to cite that as a reason to not like the film would be stupid. The character was fascinating, and my brother and I would up discussing/debating him long after the credits rolled.

Overall that's just a great movie. I don't want to review it right now, but damn it's one of the most technically impressive films I've ever seen. And the supporting cast omg. Pesci :bow

Raging Bull is maybe my favorite Scorsese movie. It's kinda hard to enjoy a boxing movie as by-the-numbers as Cinderella Man after you've seen something like Raging Bull that deals with the same topic in such a different way. :D
