WTF happened to Veronica Mars in season 2?

I'm 3 episodes in, and it's nowhere near the quality of the first season.  Were there writing staff changes or something?  Is it because the compelling main mysteries so closely tied to the main characters have been mostly resolved?

I demand explanation.  Does the seson pick up later on or anything?  Even the dialogue isn't as snappy.

S2 sucks ass. Its terrible. Basically a night-time soap. S3 is starting to decline too. S1 more and more appears to be a one off stroke of brilliance. Perhaps we should all say VM starts and ends wth S1?

Besides, S1 had the most perfect conclusion anyways.

Actually, I'm about 9 episodes in.  It hasn't gotten season 1 good, but it's picked up.  The main mystery isn't really compelling and it appears dumb and convoluted, and there is a significant amount of added soapy shit, but I'll manage to at least finish this season before dropping the show.
