forgive my ignorance.

i bought a dual core duo 2.2 recently

would this be compatible with my existing motherboard or would it vary by chip?

Should be as long as your motherboard supports all the features of this chip.

i've never overclocked and the thought of potentially destroying my machine is slightly offputting

i know it's not bad if you know what you're doing but i don't know what i'm doing

hardware isn't really my strong suite

Yeah. The C2D are great for Overclocking. There is a bunch of shit on OC C2D if you google it. Plus like FA said, ppl on the forums should be able to help you out. I haven't OC'd mine yet either. Planning on it though. I've the C2D 6300. Which I've read people have OC'd to 3.5ghz/4ghz. Depending on your heatsink.

This new processor is amazing though.  :bow :bow :bow :bow FA told me to wait... I fucking hate waiting. :p

Same here.  I always select one withholding on my employment tax forms.  I'd rather get my money when I get paid and not next year.

HOLD OUT FOR NEW TECHNOLOGY TO SUCCEED UPCOMING TECHNOLOGY

I know what you mean, but unless you're loaded or need to always be on the bleeding edge, I don't think it's a bad idea to skip processor generations before upgrading.  Moving from the older C2D to the latest wolfdales isn't that much of a performance boost to justify the cost for most people.  It would make much more sense to wait until Nehalem's release, which is poised to be the biggest processor evolution for Intel since the Pentium.

I can't wait until they start releasing more info on them.

From Wiki:

Nehalem will be launched in both native quad core and native octo core.
