Will GTA4 require an install on PS3?

There's no point. GTAIV pre loads the entire game before starting up the game so both versions won't have load times. Either way, the game is still going to have to load before you start playing, so having an install would be fucking stupid.

Something has to be up - if Bluray is just as fast as DVD (and i have no reason to doubt the many reports that it is) , then why the need for a MANDATORY install? is it that the disk cache is being used to help as a virtual memory pool or something equally as weird?

The read speed of the PS3 BD drive is slower than that of the DVD drive's read speed in X360.  I am guessing that games requiring a mandatory install were counting on the 360's read speed for streaming?  I'm not quite sure how any of that works.

Why do some exclusive PS3 games require an install?  
It just seems like either the developers are being lazy, Sony's trying to sell more hard drives, or something else is going on.

What all has required an install, exclusive-wise?  Earlier games, I'd venture to say that devs used forced installs as a sort of crutch, since they didn't know the system so well.

Pretty sure Folklore's install is optional, there is even an option on the title screen "Install"

yeah, they should have some sort of install.  the last GTA games always loaded some of the data in the beginning so maybe they could use the hard drive to help with that but the game doesn't look like it has the best sandbox game textures.

I think that mandatory installs are definitely not great, but I don't really mind them, I guess. But I could see how someone would run into a problem with like 10 mandatory installs.

I definitely don't play that many games at a time, so it's not like I'd ever have to juggle. Most games have a fairly short installation time, too. DMC4 is oddly long.

We don't know if this'll be in the final retail version of the game, but we were annoyed to see that Hot Shots Golf, just like Devil May Cry 4, features a required installation at game launch. In fact, with about 5GB of data being installed onto the PS3 drive, it's just as lengthy as Capcom's action game. We were surprised by this -- we didn't have our sandwiches ready for the long-haul.




20GB owners are totally fucked.

More and more I'm starting to the get the feeling that although mandatory installation for select PlayStation 3 games is something of a crutch for Sony's optical drive, it's also something of an advantage for streaming data and potentially reducing load times. Why then hasn't Microsoft at least considered offering optional HDD installation with Xbox 360 games? They've certainly made an exception for Final Fantasy XI Online. If mandatory installation of GTA4 results in the PS3 version having better performance, I'm going to be a tad bothered since I only plan on buying one version of the game (the one with the exclusive DLC.)
