1UP Network Announces Editorial Reorganization to Further Connect Print and Online Content
James Mielke Named as Editor-in-Chief, Videogames for 1UP Network; Jeff Green Takes on Role as Editor-in-Chief, PC Games for 1UP Network

February 6, 2008 -- 1UP Network announced today a reorganization within its editorial department, effective as of Feb. 1. In a continued mission to provide gamers with the most comprehensive, unparalleled level of content, 1UP Network has created a unique structure to connect all of its acclaimed online and print properties, delivering "360-degree" coverage and reader experiences.

All 1UP Network editors will now be under one main editorial umbrella, split into to three primary areas --- "Videogames," "PC Games," and "Video." By doing this, all editors will be responsible for either "videogames" or "PC games" content, filtering into both online and print properties, including EGM (Electronic Gaming Monthly), GFW (Games for Windows: The Official Magazine), 1UP.com, MyCheats.com, GameVideos.com, Gametab.com, and FileFront.com.

They're also changing their rating scale from 1-10 to an A-F scale.

Good luck to Milky and crew.

I really like Mielke on Retronauts.

But he has some awful taste sometimes.

360-degree coverage? Xbots confirmed.

A-F is stupid. 5 stars is the best rating scale in the business. It's used for music and movies universally, so I think it would be more than enough for games. The 100% scale is absolutely distinguished mentally-challenged to say the least.

A-F is an academic scale.  The star system is still my favorite as well.  Next Gen used that system IFC.  I also agree that the 100% scale is stupid.  I mean what's the difference b/w a 91% game and a 94% game?

the 5 point scale is the best, esp if you use 3 as average

1 = shit
2 = mediocre
3 = average
4 = great
5 = astounding

the problem with this is that gamerankings has the balls of the industry in an iron grip and is forcing everyone into a 100-point scale. even if you tell them that 3 is "good", that gets converted into a 6.0 or 60% which is a "failing" grade by most standards. even a 4, which is great on a 5 point scale, is a mediocre sounding 8.0 or 80% when converted.

I honestly have no idea how Ziff hopes to pull off letter grades at this point in the industry's cycle. the only thing I can think of is that they're going to pre-assign x/100 scores to each letter and ask/demand that game rankings use them in their aggregating

I wonder if Mielke will threaten people that don't agree with his policies with violence.

I don't agree with giving movies and music a score though.  At least this shows roughly the amount of effort on the part of the developer and there'll be less console fanboyism over a half a star.

1up, theyre cunts

they gave Omega V 4 out of 10, unforgivable

A-F rating system - distinguished mentally-challenged

Its a good thing I never read those 'gaming journalism' sites, I just play what gets played at Evilbore. So far it has worked out really, really well for me.

Maybe your beef should be with the original reviewer and not 1up itself.

Maybe I was being ambiguous, but I meant the 1up Review of O5 was terrible, not the game itself.  I played the demo and I loved it.

Exactly, A-F, with 6 points, forces them either way, which I think they may be uncomfortable with later.

there are only 5 points: A, B, C, D, and F. There's no "E" grade. Those correspond to "Great, Good, Mediocreish, Bad, and Total Shit" pretty cleanly. Use + and - to modify your opinion and it's not so bad. Companies will be pissed about B+'s however.

He also tends to get his games mixed up or just forget things.  I've heard him describe something that was totally off and always found it strange that none of the other people on the podcast corrected him.

one of the best things EGM has done is do that "non-game" review and it's always a Wii game - pwned

shane's too unbalanced.  he goes off on how much he knows about video games yet doesn't even touch his 360.  milkman has got much more diverse tastes imo.
