In here we list our fav RPGs and why.
« on: October 29, 2006, 01:17:24 AM »
I'll start:

Skies of Arcadia: Lengeds: I HATE JAPANESE RPGS, however this one was so refreshing, so fun and easy without a complex storyline.  The characters were easy to get into, the world enchanting, and it was overall just a fun time to be had.  What I loved also is just the atmosphere ... it was lighthearted and didn't try to take itself too seriously.  I dunno the game just makes you feel like you were a kid.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars:  Wait what do you mean a company gave mario and his friends...*gasp* A CHARACTER.  Why can't Nintendo make more games where Mario isn't just some fat shit jumping on things, platforms have evolved to make a more enchanting and story oriented which I like.  Also I like how this game was like every other god damn mario game in history until the sword came through Bowsers castle.  I think this was the first RPG I ever played, but even then I could tell how enchanting and smart it seemed.  It was just a refreshing break from the average and gave depth and personality to the Mario characters...

Lunar: The Silver Star Story and Eternal Blue Complete:  Awesome amazing games.  I love them  For almost exactly the same reasons why I love the Skies of Arcadia games.

I HATE:

Final Fantasy 10: I rent this and it seemed like such a chore playing this shit...everything was so dull.

Final Fantasy 8: With all it's flaws it was the first ever Playstation game, RPG, and Final Fantasy game I've ever played. I still love it.

Wild Arms: One of the first RPGs that I played on the Playstation. It was the RPG I played after Final Fantasy VII. It left an impression on me, it must have been the score, which rocked btw. A lot of things about the game and why I like it probably have to do with my age at the time. I can still play it now and appreciate it on some level.

Xenosaga: Same thing with Wild Arms. Age and Score (awesome awesome). The story itself was also very interesting but you can look at it now (at my age) and realize why some of the people who scoff at the game do. I liked the gnosticism angle but admittedly, I didn't fully realize what the game was trying to get across when I first played it. I also very much enjoyed the cast in the game. Fei Fong Wong and I.D were interesting characters. As far as game mechanics go, I loved the Deathblow system.

Final Fantasy Tactics: I love this game. A lot. Storyline: Good, Music: Good, Matsuno: Sex in my boxers. I also love the Class system, it has a sense of familiarity to it (compared to other Final Fantasies) and the skill sets for individual class were awesome.

Those are the most prominent games for me, I like a lot of other RPGs but those three stand out the most to me.

Chrono Trigger: God, what an amazing, amazing, amazing story, absolutely awesome characters, fun as hell gameplay... I could go on and on. This one is my favourite.

Secret of Mana: Playing through this one was really memorable because my fiance and I beat it together, and we had a blast, just hanging out and eating snacks and playing the game :) It's a great game, as well.

Dragon Quest (any): It's my fiance's favourite series and we played them together a lot, now I'm a full-blown Dragon Quest fan like him :)

Final Fantasty IV

Before playing FFIV I had casually dipped into some of the more cliche, mainstream RPGs. I was a big Pokemon fan, as I had loved FFVII. FFIV set itself apart from those games, in my eyes, with an amazing story populated by great characters.

At its core, FFIV is a story of redemption. The game's main character, Cecil, starts off as a badguy; within a couple minutes of playtime it is explained that he has just killed a group of innocent monks in his search for a magic Crystal. Yet the guilt of this action finally sets in, and his status as caption of the Red Barons is taken by the king. The story really sets off at this point, and you're introduced to even more complex characters.

FFIV was the first game that I played in which I actually cared about the characters. Throughout the progression of the story, you become attatched to certain characters as they come and go. I was most amazed with the evolution of the characters. Take Edward, for instance. When he is first introduced, he's a rather weak price who's special move is to run away from battle as everyone else takes lumps. But as the story progresses, Edward goes from being a generic weaksause to a savior, as he saves your entire party during a battle. That entire scene is just awesome.

Perhaps the most complex character in the game is Kain. Like Cecil, Kain starts off as a bad guy, but throughout the game he constantly is pulled back to the darkside. The guilt he has of betraying his friends eats at him. He's in love with Rosa just as much as Cecil is, but he can never have her.

Then there's Tellah, and Cid, and Yang, and Palom, and Porom...wow. A steller cast of characters. The gameplay is very good as well. The battle system makes it feel like you're actually involved with things, despite being turn based. And the music is steller.

Overall the game is just a pure classic. I've heard very good things about FFVI, and I can't wait until it comes out for the GBA. FFV comes out before though, so I'll pick it up (despite some negative feedback from certain people).

Well, I only have one friend that likes RPGs, so even if I was like you, I doubt I would've beat many RPGs, if any. I just never really liked them as a kid, as turn-based battle just seemed boring and annoying. And now, I don't feel wasting the time that most RPGs require. Those three that I beat were all pretty short by RPG standards.

Suikoden II - Non Cliche' rpg plot about the trials of war, friendship, and responsibility. Awesome story, with awesome music, great side quests, a dose of non linearity that many jrpgs lack. Even though the battle system is archaic, the game is fun as hell has a lot of charm that many games lack. My favorite rpg, and game, period. Although, I will admit first hand that I have played better games, Suikoden II touched me dammit and I never get bored with it even though I've played through it a solid 5 times since I got it 3 years ago. The perfect Japanese rpg, like chrono Trigger, because it is so short. It's short but it's just as epic, if not more than most 50-60 hour rpgs and this lends to it's replayability in a lot of ways.

Final Fantasy VIII - Awesome game that took me years to fully appreciate it. The junction system is nothing short of genius and there are numbers of ways to customize your characters. The story and characters are awesome too; they aren't cookie cutter, and their character details aren't thrown at you or shoved down your throat like in other FF's. You have to use your head and actually examine their human like characteristics. I love that game. Best Final Fantasy.

Xenogears - Pretty damn good game. One of the few story over gameplay rpgs I've truly enjoyed.

Tactics Ogre - The strategy rpg that influenced practically every Japanese srpg after it's release, and even started the whole "______________ Tactics" deal. Final Fantasy Tactics is Tactics Ogre lite. In fact, many story elements are even borrowed from that game, and it's funny. But considering they are from the same director it's not all that odd or surprising. Tactics Ogre is phenomenal although it's delivery is extremely un approachable depending on your tastes.

Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter - AWESOME GAME. The biggest evolution in Japanese role play gaming in perhaps 10 years. This game is simply pheneomenal and it's underrated/underappreciated beyond belief. If there was one game I would say that is ahead of it's time, it would be BOFV.

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne - Holy shit is this one a wopper. An rpg with gothic designs, mature content that doesn't insult one's intelligence, high difficulty, a story that does not shove shit down your throat, a unique heavy rock soundtrack, and demons frolicking to and fro killing eachother. This game is a beast. It has almost everything I want from an rpg and more.

Chrono Trigger - OMFG I love this game. When I first played this I was so addicted, that one night during a 3 AM play session my arm hurt so bad I thought I lost blood flow. I couldn't move my arm and it was because of Chrono fucking Trigger. The game is genius and whoever disputes this fact is a fool.

I have not played Baldur's Gate II, Icewind Dale, Fallout 1 and 2, or Planescape: Torment yet, but I plan to soon.

Earthbound: My favorite RPG of the SNES days, FF4 being the first rpg I had ever played. Earthbound had me from moment I turned on the game.

Story is awesome (too lazy to write it myself so here is a quote :
Quote
EarthBound is set in the year "199X" in the small town of Onett, part of Eagleland. The main character, Ness, wakes up when a meteor falls close to his house in the middle of the night. He heads out to investigate the meteor, but not before his mother reminds him to change out of his pajamas. At the crash site, he meets an insect named Buzz Buzz from ten years in the future who sends him on a quest to destroy the intergalactic destroyer Giygas in this time, because he is too powerful in the time that Buzz Buzz came from. Ness must then journey through the world, seeking his eight "sanctuaries" where the Earth's power is strongest in order to unite his own powers with the Earth's and gain the strength needed to confront Giygas.

EarthBound breaks the escapist, fantasy-oriented tendencies and themes of most RPGs by placing the action in a modern day world. These changes to typical RPG stories are often taken to an absurd extreme in EarthBound, such as the inclusion of baseball bats and yo-yos as weapons instead of swords or magical staves.

The reason I like it most however is because of the battle system, which looks like this:

The backgrounds of the battle move like Winamp visualizations or perhaps a trippy drug induced coma of sorts. You never see your characters ala dragon quest but you see your attacks fly and hit your opponents (magic anyway). If you are hit, your hp meter shown above actually rolls down like a gas meter of sorts, and if you beat the oppenent before the damage inflicted reaches where it was supposed to go, it can save your life. The more "guts" (stamina)  you have, the more often this meter will stop at 1 from a critical attack and save your life.

You encounter enemies on the world map, much like chrono trigger, you have to bump into them to fight. If however the enemy is a lower level then you , you win the fight automaticaly.

This game is also pretty funny, in a definate japanese way, humorous conversations will occur. The enemies are humorous too, you will fight hippies, shrooms, blue people, stop signs, wierd stuff. Its awesome. Truly epic.

EDIT: Almost forgot, the music in this game is very much like the battle backgrounds, trippy, technoish awesome. First SNES game using samples from real songs I believe. Almost every song is memorable, hell I could hum them right now, 10+ years from my first play.

Shadowrun SNES: Merges two of my favourite genres: PNC adventures and RPG's. And does a fantastic job of it by the way.

Earthbound: A Japanese RPG about contemporary American society. Great music, memorable characters, and a tried and true battle system. Sure it's basically a quirky DQ clone, but it works.

Final Fantasy VI: Espers, airships, ultima, genji gloves, operas...damn it's been too long. Can't wait for the portable version.

Actraiser: God game with sidescrolling action levels and boss battles. Yeah.

World of Warcraft: Loot, loot, and more loot. I'm rehabilitated, but thanks for the memories (might be back, come Burning Crusade)

Dragon Quest
My first RPG and the one that made me fall in love with the genre and the Dragon Quest world.  I still love this game.  Everything except the menu system.

Dragon Quest 3
This is probably my favorite RPG ever.  The sheer size of world and amount of exploration you did.  Being able to recruit your own party and then change their classes later.  The world map being a version of Earth.  The shock of discovering Alefgard and then becoming Erdrick / Loto.  This was a long, difficult, and amazing adventure for an 11 year old.

Final Fantasy IV
My introduction to the Final Fantasy series.  I immediately fell in love with the game upon seeing the red wings and hearing the theme music and the rest of the game did not disappoint at all.

Chrono Trigger
Probably my second favorite RPG ever.  I like the story, characters, battle system, graphics..., just about everything really.

Skies of Arcadia
This game is on the list because I love the world it's set in.  I flew around for hours in my airship above and below mid atmosphere and made discoveries and landed in different towns to look around and listen the music.  In other ways the game was average or even bad (the battle system :/).

Since I've had a fairly steady supply of good strategy, strategy RPG, and MMORGs to play over the last 5 years I have played very few new traditional RPGs (and mostly didn't like them).  This might be changing, though.  I'm picking up Final Fantasy III, V, and XII next month.

Maybe, I haven't really liked the RPGs I've played this generation, though.

I liked Skies, disliked (but finished) Grandia 2, and then got completely hooked on Phantasy Star Online.  After the Dreamcast died, I moved to the PS2 and played a few PSX RPGs in FFIX (hated it) and Dragon Quest VII (tired of it 40 hours in).  Then started in on PS2 RPGs as they came out and really hated Final Fantasy X and didn't like Wild Arms 3.  After that, I took a long break from any RPGs that weren't DQ remakes on the GBC.  I started playing again with Dragon Quest VIII but again only made it 30 hours in before getting bored.  I liked Disgaea but didn't play it that long because I got tired of setting up geo panel chains.  Now I'm coming around again for the job based Final Fantasy games and Final Fantasy XII which will hopefully suck me in with political machinations.

It may just be nostalgia that makes me want to like the genre again and I never will.

I've been rpging all weekend

 LIST

Secret of Mana: First rpg-like game that I bought. I played it to death and it pretty much turned me towards the RPG side.

Final Fantasy 6: Better characters than most of the modern FF games, beautiful sprite backdrops, great soundtrack and I actually really liked the World of Ruin.

Skies of Arcadia Legends: or SoA, Legends is just fine tuned a bit. Still the best 3d era jrpg. Yet again, good likeable characters triumphs over whiney emoboy shit.

FF9: I merely like this game, not love it.  I'd love it if the random battle encounters were lesseened greatly. Really annoying, but outside of that I liked the game a lot.  It's weird to thinkt hat Square messed with so many aspects of the game during this period, but never fixed the most glaring problem.  They made characters generic in 7 by allowing them to have the same skills, they screwed up the magic system and game balance in 8, and changed the whole theme and world, they made it fully 3d in 10 but still RANDOM BATTLES!

Fallout 1&2: Two of my favorite pc RPGs though I never beat either.  It's just a cool setting and wacky stuff happens.

Diablo2: online uber gauntlet

Guild Wars series: Put so many hours into this game. My standard for what future online rpgs should have. Best combat in the genre, best pacing(outside of factions), an actual story, best pvp, tons of strategy, no grind, pick up and play while still having lots of depth, best graphics, best server system and quick fixes.

I've been playing Nightfall all weekend and its so much better than Factions.  They screwed up the pacing of Factions and the classes weren't that great.  I've been playing Dervish and it's great fun, and the leveling/pacing is back on track. The Hero system and improved AI is a great boost to the game, and loot is more useful with the insignia system and the fact you have Heros to stick good weapons on.  The thing that's been lost a lot is actual cooperative online play.  Everybody is just soloing with their Heros setup like how they want them and I've only done two missions with an actual group.  I have two monk Heros, which I set up one Heal and one Prot, both with lots of condition removal.  I have an axe Warrior with Eviscerate and Watch Yourself, an Ele I set up as earth warder and aoe, a Dervish which I haven't done much with and I just picked up a Necro Hero that I turned into a Minion master and wow, he rocks.

The missions have been interesting as well. I had one mini mission where I assaulted a group of bandits, killed them and took their clothes, then posed as them to spy on a secret meeting.  The last big mission I was in was an all out assault on an enemy base, which was intense and heavy.  You have to secure points and disable catapaults.  The last one I had, I actually cleared a cave out of giant insects and turned it into a secret base of operations.

I've played Mother 0, but not Earthbound.  I'd like to play Mother 3.  Being attacked by hippies and toasters is pretty awesome.

And don't make me start a GW thread.

I am afraid posting positive Guild Wars threads is like spamming.  Because it's not true.

Earthbound is way better then the prequel mother. Mother 3 is not as good as earthbound in some ways, better in others.
Fuggin play earthbound now!

I remember contemplating getting Earthbound when it came out, but I didn't because the game looked cutesy and the box was so damn huge.

I still play it every so often for nostalgia purposes. The game is still awesome in every way.

It's so true it hurts.  Why pay for the cow when you can get the milk for free?

The music was fantastic

At the time, the graphics were cutting edge and the art style was gorgeous.
