REmake was a step backwards for the series IMO.
RE1: Dir Cut was awesome because it knew what it was doing. Its lack of technical perfection worked FOR the cheesy B-Movie Horror motif.
RE2: Technically excellent, but an over-abundance of ammo and a focus on ACTION made it an action movie, which has very little suspense or well...its almost not RE anymore. Aside from the lore and tank controls, I dont consider this to be much of an RE game in the 'spirit' of RE.
RE3: They tried here, and ill give props for that. Unforunately even with the 'stalking' aspect which is sorta cool, they didnt recapture RE1's spirit OR RE2's technical excellence, and as a result ended up with a meh game.
RE: Code Veronica - A step in the right direction, totally. The true sequel to the original IMO. Worth grabbing the PS2 port if you havent.
RE ZERO: I actually liked this one better than RE: Remake because at the very least, for all its misguided intentions they weren't attempting to one-up the original, just add more to it.
RE: Remake - Wow, you remove all the awesome cheesy voice acting, half the awesome cheesy lines, and focus on the technical aspects and you end up with a soulless copy of the original that at the very least gave GC owners something to play. I will admit however that the Crimson heads are tough enough to actually give players a sort of fear. Wish the original DID have this.
RE4 - I liked it, but its not Resident Evil. Again, technically excellent and that is becoming Capcom's trademark these days. However, I wouldnt have even called it RE4, just call it something else, name the character something else.
