Another "great" shuri review.
I picked up the ps3 version for 40$ at Best Buy, I knew the game had some problems but for 40$, it couldnt be so terrible, right? First off, I forgot how lame shooters felt without rumbling. Secundo, the game starts fine, the firefights are great, the whole 'use the env. to kill your ennemies' is awesome in the first levels or two. Then the game goes to hell.
The story is your typical hk action flick story, but its still somewhat better than 80% of the crap you get in games. PS3 version is ENGLISH ONLY, unlike the 360 version which had at least the french dub. The french dub actually used the voice actor that dubs Chow Yun Fat in his movies; so the voice acting is awesome.
His original voice, in english, is really, REALLY awkward for some reasons. Chow needs to work on his english. Everyone sounds so dramatic yet he sounds INCREDIBLY BORED. It would had been awesome to have an option for subs with chinese voice actors. I remember watching that Corruptor flick with him and my boy Marky Mark, and he sounded normal. Now here he sounds like he doesnt care.
The levels after that all turns into a straight flashback to the psx/n64 days of 3rd person shooters. The missions become objectives oriented; 'Find 12 drugs labs and destroy them', 'Destroy 4 boats', 'Place 14 C4 charges'. The game stops being about awesome gunplay and crazy stunts, it becomes a hunt for shitty hot spots where you have to get close to. There's a mission where you have to place C4 charges, but you have to shoot out the sets to create path so you can reach those hot spots. This is so beyond lame and it takes you away so much from the experience.
I guess Midway were worried that people would get bored of the shooting action; so they decided to go with those objectives missions. Max Payne 1-2 and The Punisher never got boring; but then again StrangleHold's shooting isnt as good as the ones in two 3 games.
The online mode is dead, but then again I was playing this on ps3.
This game could had been so much; 5/10.
