Dude, this chin has got it all. Three levels, hide-a-way timber home (underneath the second floor), silent state-of-the-art spinnaz, fleece hammock, food galore, apple-flavored sticks to gnaw on and comfy bedding! He's sleeping on the second floor right now (all the dust is from his recent dust bath), but when he's awake, he struts around his fine, palacio estate.

how long can you keep a chinchilla in a cage during the day? they'd be fun just to pet because of their awesome fur.

You keep them caged pretty much the entire day. They're nocturnal. I let him out for an hour or two at night.

The same thing you do with all pets - feed 'em, pet 'em, play with 'em, etc. I got him a big ball he can roam around the house in that he really digs. I let him loose in my bedroom and he usually chills on my lap while I type on the 'bore. He likes to kick jump off walls and doors. He's cool. He's started to "groom" my hand.

He will if I don't enclose him in an area for about 15 minutes when I first let him out. Then he's all pooped out from the excitement and I let him free roam.

One of the associates at Petco actually recommended www.chinchillarescue.org, which apparently has a better selection of chins (including violet ones!) and cheaper (just $50 donation). They're located near Menlo Park. After Ash is thoroughly situated, I might get him a buddy.

Negative. Chins are practically odorless. The only odor they create is from their cage, which does need to be cleaned out at least once a week (I do it on Sunday and do poop sweepings every other day).

I will definitely document my findings when I attempt to pair him with a rescued chinchilla later this year. He sleeps a lot more since I got him the wheel and ball, but I think he gets wiped from the exercise. He was all awake this morning, but all he wanted was for me to give him a raisin.
