Better game: Super Metroid or Castlevania: SotN?

Similar games in terms of depth and style.  Which did you prefer?  Personally, I think SM is the better game due to tighter controls and more relevant and useful mechanics/items (there's a TON of extraneous shit in SotN that you never use); it also manages to present a more focused quest as compared to the somewhat meandering SotN while still remaining relatively open-ended.  The quality of the music and sfx in each game is similar (I prefer SM's composition, but SotN's sound quality is of course superior due to the hardware), and the graphics are comparable relative to the hardware.  My main gripe with SotN is the difficulty -- it's pretty easy, really.  Even the boss encounters are jokes as compared to SM, which iirc made me sweat a few times.

I've been replaying SotN recently and realized anew that it's a hell of a game, which prompted this comparison.  I had only played/beaten it once when it was first released, and never really came back to it until now.  Awesome, awesome game.  Great scope, incredible music and sound effects, and great art.  Are the other Metroidvanias better than SotN?  If so, which ones specifically?

I've never played SOTN.  :'(

Aria/Dawn of Sorrow on GBA/DS respectively are both pretty damn good and I've seen a few people put them up with SOTN, though.

I've played all the portable ones, but I liked SOTN so much I played through it like seven times. I think that speaks volumes.

SotN, barely. SotN had better music, graphics, and bosses -- plus, I loved all the secret uberweapons. Super Metroid had much better level design and environmental puzzles and some really memorable moments. It's a hard call.

Wow, Doug, I'm surprised.  I would have thought that you'd prefer SM due to its tighter, more focused nature.  So much of SotN, as great as it is, just feels superfluous imo.  I love its atmosphere and scope, though.

Also, the lack of a "sort" option for your items annoys the crap out of me.  Oversight total. :P

The superfluous stuff doesn't get in the way of the game though.  There is too much of it, but I never found it confusing or anything.  I played SOTN so to death.  Alucard controls so fluidly and he has a number of moves that look cool and feel smooth as hell to pull off.  I just loved roaming around the castle skillfully killing enemies.

Yeah, it's certainly not intrusive, but it's a bit of an annoyance considering the sheer number of trivial items/weapons you can acquire, since you always rush to the item screen to see what sort of goodie you've just picked up, only to realize that it's yet another pork fried rice or corned beef and cabbage or whatever.  Or, worse yet, another generic short sword equivalent. ;)

I mean, even looking beyond items/equipment, the entire familiar system, while nice in theory, just serves no practical purpose really (aside from the Sword familiar).

Fist of Tulkas owns you, though (that's the one that allows you to spit out fireballs and has a rapid combo attack for massive damage).

Yeah, the controls are really ace for the most part.  I wish the normal walk was a bit faster, but I generally do the backslide anyway when I want to traverse ground in a hurry.

I mean, it's a really huge oversight.  I have no idea how that got by playtesting given the sheer volume of items and equipment in the game. :P
