We need more decent public transportation systems in the U.S.  Too bad were too ass-backward regarding major public transportation initiatives.  Both Europe and Asia are far ahead of us in this regard.

public transport in major metro areas is actually pretty good.  The problem with the US is that so many of our cities are spread too far out for good public transport systems to be feasible

The DC metro area has a fantastic public transportation system.  I feel sort of bad for not making use of it, but I'm running late for work almost every single morning and I can't afford the time to wait for the bus to arrive.

Really, the only problem I have with the area and my commute is the traffic on 270 between Frederick and Rockville.  The region has expanded far beyond what that long stretch of two lanes can handle.  Every single morning is a dead stand-still, regardless of accidents and whathaveyou.  Thankfully, I don't have to use it very often anymore.

oh man, i feel totally sorry for you if you have to take that every day

it would drive me absolutely mad.  there's ALWAYS something happening on the 270 spur

Not so much anymore.  It was actually my motivating factor for moving to the metro area.  I couldn't afford to quit my job, and that drive was not only sucking up nearly all of my free time, but making me very irritable at work and at home.

yeah, i hear about it all the time.

where do you work, if you don't mind my asking?

(part of town, not job)

edit: and we're moving from tyson's to reston, so my commute will straight triple.  i haven't decided if the job is worth sticking around for at that point.  i'm looking at an hour and a half plus commute each way for a job i don't even like
