OMGWTFBBQ @ the first boss!!!  :maf  ??? :o :punch

spoiler (click to show/hide)
How the hell are you supposed to beat him when he can just go off and hit my entire party for 250 HP a turn, and my guys only have like 350-400 HP and all my healing shit only does 100 HP to one person? That's fucked up. I've barely even got to fight any guys yet, am I just supposed to run around in this first little area for an hour or two to get my guys strong enough to beat him? I could have beaten him easy if it weren't for that one cheapass move he keeps spamming. His other attack only does like 125 to one person, and I was hitting him for about 250 per turn (he has 1600 HP). I guess I'll fight him again and try to get lucky this time.  ::)
[close]

Have the dweeb use Flare, hit up Kaim with a power drink and have him attack.

Yeah, I figured out the second time that Fire > Wind. I was using Ground the first time, but that wasn't the best choice. It still took a little luck (he didn't slam me with Ground Pound repeatedly this time) but I beat him.

Okay, I've got a few questions about the skill system.

I like to make my characters all unique, with various abilities. However, because the Immortals don't have their own skills, does this mean I'm going to have to make my Immortals carbon copies of my Mortals?

Jansen has the Steal skill, but I want Seth to be my Thief...how can I spice up my party line up without making my guys carbon copies of each other?

You have limited skills slots, so everyone can't have every skill equipped. Also there's items to get skills from. And I would assume at some point you get other mortals to leech skills off of.

Am I alone in thinking that this game is kind of. . .ugly?

It seems like a waste of the UE3 engine.  It has all the engine kinks like framerate bumps and very mild v-sync issues, but none of the strengths.  It's not pushing a ton of geometry, it's not using shaders to any great measure.  The texture quality isn't that impressive.

It looks good, mind you, but it looked better when I was watching it in tiny web movie windows than it does on the Giant Sex TV.

I think I may have just expected the moon after Blue Dragon.  And hey, I'm only a lil bit in.

I think it's bad art.  I wasn't impressed with the character designs or the outdoor enviroments.  My observations are just based on videos though.

Well, no. . .even BD had those problems, but at least BD looked fucking stellar.  From textures to the lack of AA, this doesn't particularly look impressive.  Why did they license the UE3 engine when they could have probably pulled this off equally well, if not better, with the tech developed for BD?

(Well, I guess the answer is that both games were being developed simultaneously)

That car ride in the beginning looked like a PS2 game, but I guess you never see that environment again.

First boss is amazing. Great endurance test and the first true example where the game shows you that the guard bar is the key to success. Good battle that is all about managing resources, and deciding who's the most important member in the party during the fight. Here's a hint for those having trouble: Jansen.

Took 3 tries.

Yes. You're still in Tutorial Land up to that point; after that you get to fight a lot, see some neat landscapes, probably get roughed up by the first boss, and see lots more story stuff.

It really depends. If he keeps spamming that move that hits all the characters you're fucked.

Done playing for the night. Impressions time.

5-6 hours in currently. I'm at the Sea of Bahm.

I'm enjoying the game a lot, especially the characters. Overall, I'd say that so far it's a lot more enjoyable than Blue Dragon and Mistwalker fixed up a few issues that game had, like the frame rate for instance, or the shitty menu interface, or the characters who aren't appealing (Marumaro I'm looking at you).

Positives and negatives:

+ Random battle rate is extremely forgiving. There were some points where I didn't get into a random battle for an upward of 45-60 seconds, or at least, it felt like that. Typically it takes 15-20 seconds for a random battle to appear, and even then, most battles are fast. Thankfully the splash screen or whatever for the random encounters loads extremely fast, unlike what I saw in the videos prior to release. Funny.

+ Light on the grinding. The experience system is Suikoden-esque; once you get to a particular level cap in an area, you will tend to stop gaining much xp at all. Thus it's hard to grind. However, if a character is underleveled, this means they can catch up quickly.

+ Thousand Year Dream segments are absolutely captivating. They have neat text effects, beautiful music playing in the background, and these neat background images that change depending on where the story goes. They are well written and give Kaim a certain amount of depth he otherwise wouldn't have, even though you can't actually see the stories take place in a cutscene. You can go read them at any time, so they aren't obtrusive. Really soothing and unique pieces, I think, "misuse of the medium" or not.

+ Great graphics and art direction and general presentation. The game definitely looks a lot better up close and personal. The peak of the mountains made me drop my draw because of its beauty. UE3 in full effect in this game, and unlike Mass Effect, it doesn't have distinguished mentally-challenged texture pop in. I guess this is just more evidence that Bioware's programmers suck or something. Anyways, it feels like an actual next gen jrpg, unlike Blue Dragon. It kind of reminds me of when I first played Final Fantasy X, and saw how the game handled those transitions from in game to battle in Zanarkand. It wasn't something that was possible with the previous technology. Lost Odyssey kinda makes me feel the same way some how. The presentation is top notch.

+ Great music. It always fits the mood and while not nearly as memorable as Uematsu's FFVI-VIII work, it's still well made. Probably on FFIX's level, but I'll have to continue playing to find out! Overall, good work Uematsu. Especially on the dream sequences.

+ The characters. Kaim, Seth, and Jansen are a wonderful trio. The game constantly has sequences that have them interact with each other, and the chemistry is just perfect. Jansen, in particular, almost every scene he is in has me LOL'ing. Kaim is like an immortal Squall, which is fucking awesome. I'm just waiting for him to say,"Whatever." so I can laugh. Seth is Rikku/Yuffie/Selphie-esque...when she wants to be. She's playful, but serious when she needs to be. Overall, thus far, the characters are my favorite part of the game. They're a huge step up from Blue Dragon's meh characters, who, while charming, were lacking "oomph".

+ The game manages to switch between being serious and light hearted at the flip of a hat. It has a dark tone, but the game has no problem pulling any punches when it comes to getting the player to laugh.

+ Pretty solid story thus far. Coupled with the Thousand Year Dreams segments, the story seems interesting, I think. There's a ton of mysteries already, and I wonder where it goes. There's signs of political intrigue, which makes my dick hard.

+ Battle system is fucking awesome. The ring system makes battles constantly engaging, forcing the player to pay attention at all times. Magic charge system in effect is always badass. The guard system takes the traditional jrpg row system and warps it to a new level. The battles, especially because of the first boss battle, are really interesting. I cheered when I got the "do three perfects in a row" achievement. The ring system is really rewarding.

+ Customization, while currently limited, is still fun. I've made Kaim my Warrior, Seth my Thief/Assassin, and Jansen's a Red Mage.

+ Interactivity. Playing FFVII this past Christmas break made me realize how we have actually regressed in that regard when it comes to jrpgs. Lost Odyssey ups and the ant and is a return of form if you will. There's always tons of objects and things to interact with. You can kick a ball in the playground ala Costa Del Sol, or even play a piano. I'm liking this.

+ Reasonable difficulty. It's not a Megami Tensei game but it's decent. The first boss took me three tries to defeat, which isn't bad for a first boss. It's not a complete cake walk like Blue Dragon, thankfully. I've had a bit of trouble since there seems to be a lack of mp items thus far. Yeah, it's pretty DraQue. You need to conserve mp and know when to use it in this game it seems, which is always awesome.

+ No stupid third person view bullshit. The camera angles present in Lost Odyssey are really dynamic and give the world a lot of life.

- As of now I seriously have no complaints, major or minor, which is rare. I'll probably think of something to nitpick later. I guess I could say the load times suck, but they are only annoying prior to cutscenes, when they are longer than average. I've seen far worse. Another case of people over blowing a games problems.

So far, the game has exceeded my expectations. I just really expected a well made jrpg, but this is actually pretty damn good. If you're a fan of FFVII-IX I don't understand how it's possible to miss this game, as you owe it to yourself to give it a shot. Even more so for those of you who weren't big on FFXII, like yours truly.

Lost Odyssey is a huge step up from Blue Dragon. Check it out and prove to the press once again, that they're full of shit. Traditional rpgs will never die.

i use jansen as my black magician because he's not fast enough to steal.  just because he CAN steal doesn't mean he HAS TO steal.  just have the immortals copy the skills you want them to have and then put those in the slots.  add one accessory and viola! you have your custom character.  i made seth a fighter and she's not as strong but she's fast so she wipes up messes all the time before monsters get to attack.

So I think I really dig the battle system in this game.  It's a nice balance between OG turn-based with an extra layer of tactics on top.  The tactics are not overbearing, and I bet if you wanted to, you wouldn't have to pay that much attention to them, but taking advantage of the tactics, in addition to the ring system and the spellcasting delay stuff, makes this a smidge deeper.

A few questions.  Feel free to spoiler your answers.  Note that I do not read manuals for RPGs because they are usually filled with spoilers, so I may be asking for info in the manual.

1) How many characters can you have in battle at once?

2) How many characters are there total?

3) How much side quest stuff is there (in comparison to BD, which had quite a bit of optional stuff)?

4) Longer or shorter than BD?

thanks.

I'm only 4 or so hours in, so it's a bit premature (also worth noting that I didn't think BD picked up until the four or five hour mark), but I think it definitely has the potential to be better.  Like BD, the first hour or two are particularly slow, but after that, it was all good.

The game's loading times are on the lengthy side, but random battles are infrequent, and the individual areas are rather big, making it so you don't really encounter loading times enough for them to get annoying.

Graphics are still the most disappointing aspect of the game.  Don't listen to Himu, this is not UE3 in full effect.  This is probably the worst looking UE3 game.  It's jaggy, textures are low resolution, and shaders are generally only used for effects, not on characters or the environment.  If it's UE3, it's UE3 with all the sliders on "low".

Himu is playing on an SDTV, though, so that probably makes the not great textures and lack of AA more tolerable, or maybe even not noticeable at all.

Again, the game *does* look good.  Just not great.

The jaggies aren't really bad most of the time--it was worst in Big RPG Town at the beginning, in the sections that had lots of criss-crossing girders.  I may have made the issue more pronounced by fucking with my TV's settings in order to not make the Wii look like shit on it.  I'm also playing at 720p on a 50" TV.  Is that big enough to make aliasing an issue even if 2x-4x AA is applied?

Wait -- reading the GAF thread -- are people actually DYING fighting the first boss? I beat him the first time without even using Flare, I only retried him because I didn't like my item usage.

Himu just said he died like 3 times on him.  I beat him my first try.

To this point I was taking that to mean that they just retried like I did.

How could you actually be wiped out by him? Pussies.

I think it depends on level. A lot of the folks I've seen who are having an easy time with him were at the level cap. I was underleveled, and his special move that his all party members would take like 200-300 hp. Also, I'm not teaching Seth or Kaim magic, so my only healer was Jansen. On top of that, it also helps if you have a fire ring apparently. I didn't have a fire ring! ;_;

He killed me twice and I killed him the third time

Seth = thief/assassin
Kaim = warrior

I'm anal when it comes to my character customization

I was at level 11 IIRC, I did no leveling. No fire ring. Pussy.

Kaim did know white magic, but items > magic anyway since they act first.

Items aren't greater than magic when it comes to heal magic. Heal magic is instant.

So you killed him without using Flare and you were level 11? That's impossible wtf

Did he use his special move on you at all?

You have to learn all of Kaim's skills for an achievement. Are they particular skills just for him, or does that mean, Kaim has to learn EVERYTHING

Maybe 12? I leveled as much as it took to run straight through the forest and straight up to the boss. I remember seeing 11 next to my file when I was reloading it to rebeat him.

Heal magic isn't instant I don't think, am I crazy?

Anyway, I thought I remembered reading he was weak to water and I had no water, so I used one water stone, then left Jansen to use barrier spells and had the other two attack. Jansen died 3 times but so did the boss.

I tried again and kept using phoenix downs, then I realized that he was weak to flare not water and dominated his ass on the third attempt.

Occasionally he casts Down Draft (hits your whole party for 250+) twice in a row. When all your healing stuff only heals 100-150 to one person, that's pretty tough to come back from.

You have to learn all of Kaim's skills for an achievement. Are they particular skills just for him, or does that mean, Kaim has to learn EVERYTHING

You have to learn everything. From what I've read, Mortals get all their skills by Lv. 52 so all you have to do is level them up enough, but Immortals have to learn all the Mortal skills plus all the item skills to get their achievements.
