Sweeney Todd? More like Sweeney Godd!!!!!!!!
« on: February 14, 2008, 08:09:05 PM »
I am officially gay for Johnny Depp.  He is so amazing in this.  And holy shit, Tim Burton actually made a movie I fully love with no reservations (I can't even say that about Big Fish, which is my second favorite of his).  For once, his wacky overly theatrical style works in favor of the movie instead of making us aware of the artifice (as it did in the execrable Charlie and the Chocolate Factory).

Ichi's musical ratings:
1. The Music Man: 9.431223/10
2. Sweeney Todd: 4 Romantically suicidal Arvies out of 5
3. West Side Story: 8 1/2 oiled-up Ricans looking for a rumble
4. Fiddler on the Roof: 1 Willco with 3 rebellious daughters
5. Mary Poppins: 1 hot naked 25-year-old Julie Andrews in my bed

I watched the first half of this in bed last night, and what I saw was fan-fucking-tastic.  I need to watch the rest.  I kinda want to wait to see it in HD though :(

I saw it in a Japanese theater and it was an amazing experience.  I think I'll probably go see it again this weekend.  I ended up buying the soundtrack!

It's weird, I had like no real expectations for this movie, just figured it would be Burton doing his dark gothic thing again, but it works so well in this film!  I can't believe it flopped, I guess it's hard for an R-rated musical to do well.  Especially when it's a HARD R like this one...so much blood in this movie....

My Newspaper productions advisor said this was the worst movie she's ever seen.

I promptly reviewed it for our next issue and gave it a 4 and a half stars out of 5.  That lady fucking doesn't know shit.  She thought Poisonwood Bible was a good book.  :yuck

I was hesitant when I heard that Burton basically just cast all his regulars in the movie and asked 'em to sing, but it actually works really well, since the amount of close-ups call for a bit more subtlety in terms of emotion than someone who solely works in musical theater might be capable of (IMO).

4 1/2 stars...I don't rate movies except facetiously, but yeah, I can agree with that rating.  My only problem was that I wish the movie had gone on for a bit longer, but the pacing is really good so over-lengthening it might've ruined the flow.

I really liked the singing.  I liked that it wasn't like, over-produced or anything.  I think that adds character to the movie.

It also looks like buttsex.  If the second half is as good as the first, why did Juno get a nom, but not this?

According to the movie sites I visit (Hollywood Elsewhere among others), it didn't get a nomination because the old musical-loving fogeys at the Academy didn't like the fact that it was a horror musical and had so much more visualized violence than the stage version.

how was it received by the natives over there?  Its been doing pretty well internationally, so I gotta ask, does a Japanese audience lap up a english language gore musical?

I loved it too. Just behind Jesse James and Zodiac for best movie of last year. Day one purchase too. Helena Bonham Carter deserved some noms for this; shes fantastic.

The girls have my school have been talking about it a lot, just because Johnny Depp's in it.  I don't know if that'll translate to anything box office-wise, but Depp is really, really popular here, maybe even more than in the US, if that's possible.

The theater was half-full when I went to see it last Friday night.

Obviously. I will say it again though for the millionth time - TWBB was my most anticipated film of 2007 (and Im a total PTA zealot), yet sadly, it never came to theatres here, so I must wait for the HD DVD. So since I havent seen it, I cant say its the best movie from last year.
