Real Talk, no bullshit. Constant Headaches
« on: February 15, 2008, 12:58:04 AM »
So this is not one of those dumb GAF "HAY GUYS I CAME BLOOD WHAT SHOULD I DO!??!" threads.  I already went to the doctor tuesday, and I'm likely going back again tomorrow, possibly for a CT scan, because when I don't feel well, I go to the doctor instead of posting about it on a message board.  (But imma do that too now!)

For the last couple of years, I've experienced several different medical problems.  The big ones are related to my stomach (possibly IBS) and eyesight (it just got worse all of a sudden one day).  But I get medication and everything's cool.  No stomach pains and my eyesight is actually getting a little better.

But since last thursday, I've been having constant headaches.  They aren't major, but they just won't go away.  I went to the doctor a few days ago and got some medicine.  It's been pretty effective in stopping or reducing the headaches, but I still have them a little and up until today I had a strange feeling between my eyes, almost like a bruise.  That seems to be gone now.  I also feel like I'm experiencing a little bit of memory loss, more related to me wanting to say a word and forgetting it for a second, or forgetting a few things (I forgot about a meeting last friday.  This was the first time this has ever happened. although I was pretty busy that day).  I don't feel like this is happening now though.

The doctor thinks it's just neurosis.  I am worried about my future, since this job is over at the end of July and I don't know what the hell is going to happen.  But I don't know if it's just that, plus doctors here ALWAYS say anything you get is stress-related at first.  Anyone here ever experience something similar to this?  Any thoughts?  I tend to over-worry about shit like this and always fear for the worst, which I'm sure only adds to the stress.

I have all sorts of random aches and pains through my day. I will say this, even tho it makes me sound crazy, but ever since I started taking a melatonin suppliment my life has been much improved. I used to spend all day fatigued, have frequent heart palps, and was worn down from the smallest of tasks. Ever since I started taking it before bed I enjoy nights where I sleep within 5 minutes of laying down, and days where I am awake, alert, focused and ready to engage people.

In short, maybe its some weird chemical thing.

For several months, I was having frequent diarrhea, stomach pains, chest pains, heart palps, dizzy spells, almost daily headaches, anxiety attacks, you name, and the doctors couldn't find anything physical wrong, and told me that it was probably stress related. As I started working backwards in my mind, I remembered that all of this started happening right around the time that I started getting really stressed out about another medical problem I was having. It turned out to be something incredibly minor and has long since been taken care of, but I'm only just now starting to return to normality after nearly causing myself to have a nervous breakdown worrying about it.

In short, the more you worry about your health, the worse your health gets, causing you in turn to worry more about your health, and then in turn feel even worse. Once you start thinking, "Well I know the doctor said it was nothing, but maybe it's cancer/brain hemorrhage/AIDS/etc." you are boarding the express train to Driving-Yourself-Crazytown." Keep going to the doctor, have all the tests run, take the meds, do what you gotta do, but try not to worry about too much. The brain is a bitch, and it will seriously fuck your shit up if you let it.  :-\

Yeah, that definitely sounds serious enough that you should be legitimately worried about it.  I don't really trust the doctors around here, tbh.  I've gone for check-ups so many times only for the doctor to give me a very cursory evaluation and just dismiss my problems as a cold or something and then give me medicine which momentarily makes me feel better, but the symptoms return as soon as the medicine's finished. :/

This won't help your neurosis, but my mom's spent years combatting migraines with various treatments with no real success.

Does your head hurt on one side or both?  Does the pain build up gradually or does it reach maximum intensity very quickly?

I get migraines sometimes and they feel like something is pushing on the back of the eye. I'm not sure if that is the kind of feeling you have?

how many doctors have you seen?  i say maybe get a second opinion.  have you been eating differently?  major changes in your life?

Just one.  And actually, he's the gasterointerologist (sp) I go to for my stomach problems.  I spent a good amount of time at the hospital tuesday trying to get the people there to understand that my HEAD was bothering me, not my stomach, but they told me to go to him anyway.  He then gave me the pain medicine and told me he'd approve me for a CT scan if I felt like I needed it, and after that if there's a problem I guess it's off to the neurologist, so it doesn't matter in the end, but it was still weird.  I figured they'd at least tell me to go see my eye doctor since it could be related to that.  One of the things I've noticed is that my vision improved slightly right when I got these headaches.  Just like that.

That eyesight thing must have been terrifying.  I would have totally flipped out.

Oh, I did. I was scared to death by this...at first my vision was like a pair of binoculars, constantly going in and out of focus.  I have had shit loads of tests and they have found nothing wrong.  But I was given medicine and once I got on that the focusing stuff stopped.  Now it's just worse, a little blurrier and I see tons of "floaters" if I look into really bright lights or the sky on bright sunny days.  I've gotten used to this, actually...it has never stopped me from doing anything, even when it was at its worst when I first got it.  It's definitely better now.

Maybe I should look into this, because I have experienced all the issues you wrote about.

For several months, I was having frequent diarrhea, stomach pains, chest pains, heart palps, dizzy spells, almost daily headaches, anxiety attacks, you name, and the doctors couldn't find anything physical wrong, and told me that it was probably stress related. Yeah, I'm doing this now.  I can say that the headaches have gotten lighter each day since last week, but they're still there or I just feel a little weird, so I'm going to go back to the hospital tomorrow if I wake up and feel the same way.  Going to work has REALLY helped take my mind off things.  I don't even notice it in class.

Absolutely, I don't trust a lot of the doctors I've dealt with.  But the place I go to now has good people, and they even speak English, which is a huge plus.

Does your head hurt on one side or both?  Does the pain build up gradually or does it reach maximum intensity very quickly?

It generally bothers me in the center, between my eyes, or around my forward.  Right now it's more like a pulsating sensation or slight pain on the right side.

I get migraines sometimes and they feel like something is pushing on the back of the eye. I'm not sure if that is the kind of feeling you have?

No, nothing like that.  I should mention that I don't normally get headaches, either.  That's what scares me.

Most of my issues are gone now, but my doctor still urged me to get a full x-ray of my guts. Feeling good has helped me put that 300 dollar deal off tho ;)

Lyte Edge, your symptoms don't sound that serious.  If you want, I can send you some info about headaches from the website that all US doctors use.  Gimme a email.

Why did he recommend that?

She, I was basically having issues with breathlessness on stairs, but it might have been linked to the fatigue or the fact that while im not overweight im out of shape. Who knows. My heart rate is kinda on the high end which is anothe reason. She knew I didnt have insurance supported by where I was (its real insurance, just some company crap) so she said at any rate I should get it checked out to make sure I dont have some heart virus blah blah.

The melatonin crap wasnt a direct recommendation, I had asked for a replacement for Tylenol PM and she said it was probably causing some of the problems considering what it uses to get you to sleep so she said to switch to melatonin which she used personally.

Its really a bizzare and happy change to being awake and alert during the day.

As long as you're feeling better, that's good.  Bad sleep could cause GI problems.

Melatonin helps with falling asleep and hitting full REM cycles, but it doesnt keep you asleep like the shit in Tylenol PM will. Tylenol PM eventually wears your body out tho

Thanks for the support, everyone.  It really helped make me feel better.   :)

I woke up this morning feeling much, much better, so I didn't go back to the doctor.  I'm going to give it a few more days, and if I don't feel completely "clear" by then, I'm going back.  I have no pain today, I just feel a little "stuffed up" as if I have a cold or flu...but I don't.

Lyte, I suffered for 2 years (things like loud grating sounds and small rooms with oversaturated flourescent lighting would be triggers) in my early 20's.

I went to about 6 different doctors .. tried all kinds of medications (from the migrane meds to small doses of anti-anxiety pills, etc.).

It wasn't until I got to a "happier place" that the headaches went away. I didn't realize it at the time, but I was pretty depressed and the migranes were just a manifestation of my depression.
