No political leader would nuke Mecca.  He can vote all he wants but it won't happen.

If it were to happen, there isn't a single advantage to that strategy at all.  All Islamic countries would kick out the Americans and Americans allies would dwindle down to almost nothing.  Same would happen if the Vatican or other various sacred lands were bombed.

A lot of people have a tendency to endorse really crazy ideas in a matter-of-fact tone.  I think they like shocking their audiences and projecting the image of a cold blooded realist.

I think that applies to most of the people I've heard floating the idea of a nuclear first strike.  A couple have been really sincere redneck types, though.

I remember before the Iraq war started, and I had two separate people tell me what a great idea it would be to just nuke the lot of em.  When I said, "Hey, that's not such a good idea."  Some trucker-capped man thought for a second and said back to me, "Well, the oil's underground, right, so the bomb wouldn't contaminate it."
