The scientist lady at the end is from the future. She's planning on taking a sample of the virus so they can develop the cure. 6 billion people are going to die anyway. they can't change the past, only help the future.

I think it's the second scenario but I haven't seen the movie in a long time.

I also agree that he did really good in those 4 movies.  although snatch was just a fun, dumb movie and fight club was kind of meh compared to the book.

This is a legitimate theory, the second one in the OP is not.

Director confirms it's the first, she's the same age she was in the future.

I don't think she was there in case Bruce Willis failed. Bruce Willis and the Scientist lady had alternative motives. Bruce Willis wanted to stop the spread of the virus. The Scientist lady just wanted a sample for a cure and wanted the virus to spread anyway. It would make more sense if she was there to insure that the virus spread in the case that bruce willis actually succeeded. but that possiblity is impossible since willis was destined to fail in all scenarios.

I'm saying that people who theorize she's from the present don't realize what a huge continuity mistake that would make.
