I have a US slim PS2 and want to play The Other of the Three semi-new SNK games.

Lyte, how import friendly is this? I've looked at the trailer and it's all in Japanese. I assume there are faqs and shit.

Mantra, what's the best best method to play imports on a US slim?

SS Tenka is a budget re-release now, so if you did import it, you can find it for $30 or less.  Here's the Play-Asia link: http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-40-49-en-70-1o8l.html

The game has almost no English text whatsoever, but FAQs and such should help.  Really all you need to learn is which play style does what.  I would absolutely recommend getting this game now (assuming you can easily play it on your slim PS2), since there is no telling when that SS Collection will ever come out, and if it follows the others, it will likely hit *Japan* this year and the U.S. sometime at the end of this year or next year.  I don't know why SNK USA takes forever with their releases, but they do.  Every game comes out incredibly late...KOF XI and NGBC were what....1.5-2 years after the Japanese releases?

I should do a google search for how many times I've reposted this post since January 2006.   :lol

Samurai Spirits Tenkaichi Kenkakuden

Brief game info:

The game has a HUGE roster, featuring every character from all the 2D Samurai Spirits fighting games.  Characters not seen in playable form since SS2, like Gen-An, Sieger, Nicotine, and Wan-Fu are all back.  SNK also added bonus unlockable characters to the PS2 version, such as Kuruko.  Even the courier has returned, running across he backgrounds, tossing out various items to use.  You can select whether or not you want to use these items in versus mode.

There are six different fighting styles to choose from, based on all the past SS games.  In addition, three bonus PS2-only styles can be unlocked as well.  With these styles and the added fifth button (for dodging and countering), you get a host of game play features, like the return of the CD style combos from SS4.

Visually, the game looks better than the last few SS titles; colors are more vibrant, special attacks have been enhanced with transparancy effects, and the backgrounds are all high res 2D.  The character sprites are the same as always, but the overall look of the game is very nice.  There are no filtering options, and the game is lacking in blood and character deaths, however.  You can choose between original and arranged soundtracks, view pictures in the gallery mode, unlock more modes like survival, and more.  Load times are minimal at around 5-8 seconds per match.

Basically, SS Tenka combines all the 2D SS fighters into one excellent package.  This game is by far the best SS game ever made, trouncing even the almighty SS2 in my book, and is the best 2D fighter out on home systems (so far) this year.  With KOF XI coming out this week, it will be facing some stiff competion!

The new characters:

Old characters return to fight again.  That's Nicotine, doing a super that turns him young, in the second picture.  :)

Newcomers include Iroha, a snow maiden, and Ochamaru, a spirit trapped inside a mechanical body.

Sugoroku, whose attacks are based on items/traditions used in Japanese Matsuri (festivals)

Andrew is an American soldier who uses a musket.

Also the "SNK Trilogy Of Awesomeness" is no more.

IT IS HENCEFORTH THE QUADRILOGY OF AWESOMENESS, because Maximum Impact Regulation A is just that fucking awesome.  I would recommend importing this too, since it seems to have no chance of a domestic release, and it's very import friendly (pretty much everything is in English).

The game is a great update to MI2, which removes the frame rate issues (no slowdown!), balances the game out more, removes Armor Ralf, and adds four new characters in his place (Ash, Blue Mary, Mizoguchi from Fighters History, and newcomer Xiao Lon).  It doesn't have all the single player stuff from MI2, but there is no question that it is the better game.  The more I've played it, the more I've come to love it since its release.  I play at the arcades any time I see someone on the machine.

The thread for it is here, with more info and a few more pics.  http://www.evilbore.com/forum/index.php?topic=10975.msg265232;topicseen#msg265232

So all the 1P challenges were taken out of Regulation A? Does that mean the extra costumes/backgrounds are all accessible from the start?

I found some more old pics I took.  This is SS running upscaled on the PS3:

Yeah, that screen where you select the "groove" baffles the fuck outta me.

An easy way to think of it is that there are "grooves" for each version of Samurai Shodown.  I like to use the style that's based off of SS4, allowing for "CD combos."  Each style basically affects how your super meter works and what you can do (dashing, dodging, that sort of thing).

So all the 1P challenges were taken out of Regulation A? Does that mean the extra costumes/backgrounds are all accessible from the start?

Backgrounds, yes...but not all of the stages from MI2 are there.  They removed some of them (including all the bonus ones like the Neo-Geo and SS2 stages), but also added or changed up others.  A lot of music was also removed and replaced with tracks from the original MI or new music.  One stage has one of the stage BGMs from Sengoku 3, of all games...but I'm not complaining because it sounds cool!  Costumes were cut DOWN.  Each character only has four costumes for each version of him/herself now.  So that kind of bonus stuff is gone.  But you get a game that plays better, has more moves, and has no slowdown, plus more characters.  All four new characters fucking rock, BTW.  They also made everyone more unique; unlockable characters that had "clone" combos strings from other characters got their own.

You can see in this screen what got removed from Regulation A:

So it's very basic now, and I suspect that's why SNK released the game at a budget price.  I kept MI2 for the extras when I got Regulation A, but I just can't go back to MI2 now because of the slowdown.

BTW "time attack" is the main arcade mode.  You play it in the classic 3 man team style.  That's now the main focus of the game as compared to the 1-on-1 style from the previous MI games.  Single versus can still be played though.
