Evilbore: Teach me to like House
« on: February 18, 2008, 03:58:04 AM »
So this is like the third time I've tried to get into it.  I get through the first several episodes, and then I just quit.

I think my issue stems from the episodic nature of the show.  Similar to Dexter, there's only one good character on the show, but unlike Dexter, House lacks a compelling narrative to keep me hooked.  It's basically CSI in a hospital.

Before anyone comes in and whines about my tastes being too hoi polloi to appreciate House, let it be known that I like all sorts of proletariat televised crap.

But Evilbore, I WANT to like House.  I love Hugh Laurie, and his character is really great.  Prole has told me that it gets good at some point in season 1, but where is that point?

wow, there's a medical show with a tired gimmick but you can't get into it?  seriously?

fascinating.

tbh, I probably care about the politics of a show too much so you can skip this post and jack off on this show if you want.

Force yourself to push through to the second season. If you don't start liking it then, there's no help for you. The third season is some kind of awesome, but imo it's neck and neck with the second. Trust me, House becomes a much more interesting character and the episodes get more and more dramatic as time goes on. It escapes the CSI-in-a-free-clinic feel so many people describe it as. The quality of the writing and drama and rising action and such just gets better and better as time goes on, I promise you. If you really do want to like the show, keep watching, and if you hit the second season with no draw to push on, then you don't really want to like it.

There's definitely a point at which they figure out how to write the other characters so they can play off House, rather than just gaping at him and saying "How can you be so mean?"  He develops a good rhythm with Wilson.  They're like a modern Darcy and Bingley!  *scurries off to write fanfiction*

On the other hand, the solutions to the medical mysteries become increasingly disease ex machina.

You might want to skip right to the current season and watch the episodes as he whittles down all the prospective assistants.  It's not like watching it out of order (on a season-by-season level) will ruin it.

The arc involving the cop was pretty meh, imo. That doesn't happen til season 3, though (I think?). I think the first two are definitely the best. They have a certain style that makes them a bit more likable than in later episodes, I say.

The first season is kinda slow for the first few episodes but it really takes off in the later half.  The second season is all sorts of awesome.  I would say stick with the first season and if it not doing for it you just give up on it.  I love it myself.

The first few episodes are slow, but keep watching. I think the entire first season is devoted to fleshing out House's character, so you wont see the supporting cast get a lot of screen time during the first season. The show gets a lot better during the second and third seasons when you start seeing some decent character development. You'll eventually grow to like most of the cast.

ain't nuffin wrong with it not bein' for you, but try to finish the whole first season -- like mandark said, once they figure out how to write the supporting cast and you get to see house rumble politically with a large angry investor, it gets good.

Okay, I will give it until episode 12.  That's more than half of the first season.  If there's not one mention of radishing by then, I'm just going to watch CSI: Miami instead.
