same shit as always

If you're a passionate Dynasty Warriors fan, you're probably going to grab a copy of this game regardless of what I write here. Generally, this title delivers just about the same experience that the previous games delivered, so fans should give it a try. Otherwise, I had more fun with Dynasty Warriors: Gundam, which I would recommend to those new to the franchise but looking for a "better" button-mashing experience.

7.0 Presentation
Relatively sleek menus are complimented by a welcome Encyclopedia and Camp system (for checking out unlocked characters). Otherwise, nothing special.
4.0 Graphics
This game should look better. PS3 version suffers even more than its 360 counterpart.
3.5 Sound
Some of the most atrocious voice acting around. Why not include the original Japanese language track?
6.0 Gameplay
More button-mashing with fewer combos. Tons of level building and a new skill tree add depth to an otherwise thin experience.
7.0 Lasting Appeal
If the combat system is appealing to you, there's lots of content to keep you busy.
5.9
Mediocre OVERALL

Don't these games always get a bad rap from review sites and mags?

Two things in defense of this game:

-The graphics could be better, yes.  But a 4.0?  No.  FUCK NO.  What did DW Gundam get in this area?  If it's any higher than this game, then this little IGN reviewer bastard is smoking some serious shit and loves to freak or what.  This is the best-looking Musou game out there.

-Sound 3.5?  Look, I've only played it in Japanese, but bad voices or not, I wouldn't knock down the entire fucking score because of them.

Conclusion: Gaming "journalism" continues to be a laughable mess.  "Button mashing?"  Should I call every PC game made a "mouse masher?"  Don't you "button mash" in most action games?  How about going in-depth and mentioning WHY It feels more like a button masher then before?  How about the context-sensitive renbu stuff?  (If this is in the main review, then never mind.)

I mentioned this elsewhere, but there's a double standard going on here when yearly games like the Musou titles get trashed for being the "same old thing" and all the sports titles get decent or high marks.

Please cut the fucking shit.

goddammit i love you lyte edge.

anyone that has read our stuff, do you think lyte and myself are better than most reviewers out there? (i think magazine reviews are better because they have editors that help clean up the wording, grammar, spelling, and content)

We "work" for the internet.   ;)  We're just fans who write up stuff on occasion as a labor of love. I tend to focus on more obscure 2D fighters or titles that might not get that much attention as bigger, more popular titles to try and make people aware of these games and if they're worth checking out or not.

At one point I did some reviews for a small site that focused on import gaming.  The guy running it contacted me from the stuff I used to post on GAF...a few other people from GAF wrote for him too, and one of them told me the guy was kind of shady, but I figured what the hell, and did it anyway.  He paid me for each review with no incident for several months, then one day didn't pay me for two reviews and didn't respond to my e-mails for a week or so.  This is not a long time, but when he would send multiple e-mails to you daily wanting reviews and then just stop when it was time for the cash, something was up.  It turns out the site wasn't doing too well financially and instead of just saying that beforehand, he just took my reviews and posted them.  He did end up paying me later (not as much, as I recall, but it's hard to remember off-hand) and then I told him I'd write for free after that, but just lost interest in the site due to the shit that had happened.  I wrote one more review for him (for free) and then just stopped.  I didn't like being constantly asked or outright nagged to submit reviews; this guy just wanted to have the first reviews on the internet, I think, and so you didn't even have to play that much of a game as long as you could write something about it and get it posted as soon as possible.

I find I'm happier just writing and posting stuff on boards.  I can post what I want, take my time writing, and all the material (screenshots and such) I post is mine.  Maybe we could all make a fan site that makes no-nonsense reviews and calls out other reviews on bullshit.  That would be fun and hilarious if it got big.  Muckson's buddy has a message board called "Crankyass Gamer."  I think turning that place into this kind of site would be a fun project.

but without readers "crankyassgamer" isn't going to be anything.  i didn't see anyone there read my lost odyssey review which means that it was kind of sad to have it up.

evilbore is fine since i can say fuckshitasspoop without getting banned and review what i want.

i'd like to actually have a side job doing reviews for games and movies but i don't see that happening.  i want to spit in the face of all the reviewers that miss the important details, the movie reviewers that don't know what makes a good movie, the game reviewers that don't actually play games that much nor do they play far through the game (*ahem*), because i'm better than they are.  so is lyte edge.  but it's still a media and media employment is usually obtained by knowing someone and giving handjobs under the table to get the position, and then bending to a writing style of the magazine or paper to keep the position.  i won't be doing that any time soon.

i work for home depot.  every day is the worst day of my life.  don't worry, muckson is a supervisor but i can't believe i work for the orange box.  *le sigh*  hopefully i will either get 100% fluent in japanese and become a translator, or i will get rich off of my writing somehow.  i used to work in the same prefecture as lyte edge, about an hour north of kanazawa, and we met there a couple years ago.  i since moved back to america.
