The number of anime releases in the North American market also continued to fall, dropping another 21% after a 19% decline in 2006. The difficulty of ascertaining the scope of mass market anime sales (especially through Wal-Mart, which does not report its DVD sales) makes a precise calculation of the market size difficult.

also, everytime they try to bring something mature over, doesn't it too tank hard?

i think it's the marketing.  they're keep marketing to people already in the loop.  they need to expand the market beyond the fifteen year olds who will read a stack of manga in a bookstore then go home not purchasing any of them

I read 20th Century Boys first. the first 16-18 volumes are unfuckingbelievable but then it sort of peters out thanks to Got To Keep It Going syndrome, bane of all serialized media.

Death Note has a very obvious shark jumping moment in book 7. When they adapted it into two movies, they stopped at that moment and came up with a new, much better, and very satisfying ending. I heartily recommend reading Death Note 1-7 + then stopping and learning the movie ending.

I wish I could get into anime and see what all the fuss is about, but I none of it really strikes my fancy.  I do like Cowboy Bebop, though.  I'm not sure if that makes me a cigarillo or not - it's pretty mainstream, I think.

I don't know what the latter is.  I think Hitokage got me to watch a fansub of the Cowboy Bebop movie, and I really, really dug it.  I bought it on DVD when it came out stateside.  Then I watched the series, which is pretty great in parts.  I really haven't seen anything that seems that coherent and compelling out of the genre.  Most of the stuff peddled stateside seems creepy, at best.

Yeah thats pretty much the size of it, although a good bit of anime is made for adults over there. Pokemon and Naruto and the like are more in the realm of the 15 year old demographic.

I can understand why some people don't like animu, and I would be interested in supporting Amerikaan animation a bit more, but there hasn't been anything good that came from an American studio since Justice League.

It's decent, but nowhere near as good as Berserk. Plus the anime went to crap when they decided to change up stuff from the manga and give it an "original" ending. The manga is still going, but I don't follow it because new chapters are released like once a month.
