He's getting votes in part because people don't like McCain. The fact that 40-45% of the party is still voting against an inevitable candidate is telling, and I'd expect this to become even more embarrassing for McCain in Texas where Huckabee and Paul should get lots of votes

If that were the case, wouldn't he be getting fewer votes?

Huckabee is probably attracting the Christian base, which McCain isn't apparently going after as viciously as previous Republicans.  That base was the reason Republicans were able to consistently win over the past 20-30 years, and I don't think a Republican president can win without their support.

I think a republican candidate can win without them, but only if the candidate inspires the conservative base. McCain doesn't do that. Dobson and his ilk didn't like Romney and I still think he could win a general election, or at least do better than McCain.
