Does the God of War series really live up to the hype?
« on: February 20, 2008, 03:33:36 PM »
I say this after seeing the 1up review of Chain of Olympus by Matt Leone--an admitted fan of the series.  He gave it 9.5.  Honestly, I only played the first level of the first game and wasn't too impressed.  Ninja Gaiden and DMC3 brought much more to table, IMHO.  Should I give the series an honest chance?

Sure.  GOW's combat is not as deep as NG or DMC but that doesn't mean it's less fun.  GOW easily has better storytelling, platforming and puzzling than the other two series.

I'll probably pick the first to games for PS2 since their dirt cheap right now.

definitely try out GoW2.  it's way better than the first.

it is less fun though.  the story is a lot better than those two but the platforming and puzzling aren't that amazing.  the actual combat doesn't compare since it's mostly redoing the same combos over and over.  it's like a very linear adventure game with a fun combat system rather than an action game.  plus it has a great story.  it's good, but not worth it's hype.

True, but the combat is still way too button-mashy, repetitive and ends up hurting the overall game experience.

no. the gow games are very obviously expensive, and they're cool to play for their sheer production detail, but the combat is third-rate and the story is essentially rygar or kid icarus as reimagined by a teenage metalhead distinguished mentally-challenged fellow. n'gai croal and stephen totilo argue about the extent of its narrative genius. this is how we know that n'gai croal and stephen totilo are idiots

gow2 seriously got old in the end. they ran out of ideas, and it shows. the scenarios don't hold up on harder difficulties.

defend the fucking translator on titan. i dare youuu. worse than call of duty 4 on shiteran.

I got 2/3 through the first before being distracted. Won't pay more than $20 for any sequel.

I agree with this, and I didn't even play on a hard difficulty.
