Evilbore Job Advice (Drinky ;) )
« on: October 31, 2006, 12:41:18 PM »
Ok guys so recently I've been unemployeed, and I'm trying to make some money while at the same time trying to get my Biology degree.

I called around and this lady at Wachovia wants me to come in tomorow, and at the same time I can become a waiter at this exclusive ritsy resturant.  Should I take both jobs?  Should I go with the bank and see what becomes (because I keep thinking I want to switch to a business major)

I'm so confused and I feel like I need money as my dad's monthly 250 isn't cutting it anymore :(

If can balance both jobs and school - do it.  If you are just using both jobs for money, take the waiter gig.

I made quite a bit at Staples, and its a decent job. I did 40 hours a week of that while doing 40 hours a week of school, it sucked, but it kept bills paid.

However if you are a really good waiter you can easily dwarf any amount of money you'd make in a non-management retail positionl.

But food service is its own special sort of hell.

JOB/INTERVIEW ADVICE LOLZ:

1.) it's not about what your experience is, it's how you sell it. a job at an upscale restaurant can work just as well as a bank job (or better) if you're planning on a career with business as long as you sell the tangents well during an interview -- in this case, the customer service skills gained when working with the wealthy and privileged.

2.) connections. with the restaurant job i'd venture that if you're ambitious enough, you'll have the opportunity to chat with and impress more people in a position to give you a better career than you'd find working as a bank teller. the restaurant manager is probably a great source of connections -- he works with high-profile customers and clients all the time.

3.) your manager. suss out both jobs -- you want a manager who sees you as a resource to develop, not as a tool for exploitation. best rule of interviewing is to put yourself in the mindset that the company has to sell itself to YOU, not vice versa. the WORST thing you can do is accept a job because you HAVE to -- if you do, you become the company's and your new manager's BITCH. also, when you go in with the attitude that they need to impress you a bit, you ask much better questions and generally look far more qualified. ask "i'm looking to develop my career -- what do you offer that could grow me as an employee here?" and be sure to emphasize your potential as much as your qualifications.

4. set your sights high and your expectations low. treat every job as a learning experience, no matter how noxious or mundane. i learned a lot in my days as a grocery checker and as a caterer, even though i loathed both jobs -- in fact, i apply more of those skills as a well-paid middle manager in software engineering than i do those gained in my CS and English degrees. to tie this into point #1 -- recognize when you've gained and developed those skills, and sell the fuck out of 'em.

5. first impressions set the score, and every positive or negative thing you do after that only shifts folks' perception of you slightly. they either start out wanting to like you or wanting to hate you, and that lens will refract all of your accomplishments accordingly. work your fucking ass off and kiss a little ass during those critical first few months. never take a job where they seem fake as hell.

hope this helps!

Well dude, the job you will be getting sounds like a means to and end. So why try to get something OMG.

Just get a job that doesnt require much thought cause chances are school will require the brain power. If you can stomach Food Service I would go that route cause there is way more money to be made.

I however could not. I topped out at Staples making 13 an hour, thats the most I could make before going management but I didnt wanna :(

From your resume it doesnt sound like you need much help getting a food service or retail job.

ALSO USE YOUR PAYCHECK TO BUY:

NOV 28th! BE THERE

I dont know what that means.

You should just lie and say you were a jet fighter pilot until your cockpit mate (what is the actual term?) died from a tragic mechanical error and you couldn't muster up the courage to continue with flight school.

That's an awesome resume.

Tell them that the tragic death of your cockpit buddy has set you back physically and emotionally to the development of that of a 12-year-old boy.

the other big mistake -- thanks for reminding me, cajole -- is to assume that the interviewer is an idiot. no matter how dumb they appear, they've probably conducted a lot of interviews, and they know how the game is played. i can spot a bullshitter in an instant, and the rest of the interview depends on how much i wanna humor 'em. in fact, the critical part of an interview is the first five minutes, and everything after that is adjustment. if i smell bullshit on a resume, you're all kinds of fucked.

Tell them that you know the guy who coined MEGATON, the guy that invented THURSDAYTON and the guy who uncovered the dark truth behind APPLE JACKS.

If that doesn't win them over, they can go fuck themselves.

Exactly, if your interviewer is wearing a MAF shirt, just utter the magic words:

I don't have any job experience, and I'm going to try to get a job. Is this a good thing?

There's a Domino's Pizza like 2 minutes away from me, so I'll star there :-\
